Andrew Huberman hosted the world's leading nutrition & longevity expert. She's treated Navy SEALs and top CEOs for decades. Dr. Lyon revealed the secret to longevity isn't anti-ageing supplements, but mastering the health of this ONE organ. Her 10 most shocking revelations:

1. Muscle isn't just for strength. It's your body's glucose disposal system. 80% of the glucose you eat gets processed by muscle. When muscle health declines, diabetes and heart disease begin decades before you see symptoms.

2. You're probably eating way too little protein. 40% of women over 60 are protein deficient. The average woman eats only 68g per day. You actually need 1 gram per pound of ideal body weight. The timing of this protein matters more than you think...

3. Your first meal determines your entire day. Eating 30-50g of protein at breakfast sets your metabolism for the next 24 hours. It releases GLP-1 (same hormone as Ozempic). People who do this are less likely to crave junk food later.

4. Muscle barely burns calories at rest. Only 10 calories per pound per day. But here's what matters: muscle stores glycogen and prevents insulin resistance. It's not about the calories burned. It's about metabolic health.

5. You can't out-supplement bad habits. Sitting is a disease state. Period. Sedentary college students already show muscle insulin resistance. Being sedentary = less than 5,000 steps daily. Movement isn't optional.

6. Older people need MORE protein, not less. As you age, your muscle protein synthesis becomes inefficient. Young people can build muscle with 5-15g protein per meal. Older adults need 30-50g to get the same response.

7. Resistance training is the underappreciated foundation. Both cardio and resistance matter for longevity. But resistance training is non-negotiable for muscle health. Just 3 days per week, 40-60 minutes each. It's the one most people skip.

8. Fasting might be hurting your muscle. If you're over 60 or trying to build muscle, extended fasting works against you. Your body pulls amino acids from existing muscle when you don't eat. Timing matters more as you age.

9. Quality matters as much as quantity. You can have lots of muscle that's unhealthy. Fat infiltrates unused muscle like marbling in steak. Regular resistance training keeps muscle tissue healthy - just 3x per week.

10. The real reason people fail isn't knowledge. Dr. Lyon's insight: "A person will only be as healthy as they feel worthy of." Self-sabotage is predictable. Know your vulnerability points. Set standards, not goals.

We've been treating obesity for decades. We should've been focusing on muscle health instead. If you want to age well, muscle is the organ you can control. And it starts with your next meal. Here's exactly how to implement this today...

Here's your action plan: Tomorrow: Eat 30-50g protein at breakfast Daily: Walk 5,000+ steps minimum Weekly: Start with "High Ground" movements (supported machines like leg press) Begin with just one change. Your future self will thank you.

@SammyRArmstrong Proper muscle function is great. Muscles burn glucose to make energy and stimulate mitochondrial function by doing so, however, the energy that is made requires magnesium. For every ATP molecule you need magnesium. The best kind of magnesium to take is ReMag a non-laxative

@SammyRArmstrong I can’t gain weight and I don’t eat processed food, but very limited protein. Is there some supplement? I have this awful tasting powder from my son’s allergist and I cannot stomach it.

@SammyRArmstrong 1g of protein per pound isn’t very hard if you stop eating salads as full meals

@SammyRArmstrong Brilliant thread from @SammyRArmstrong. But here's the missing piece: your immune system orchestrates ALL of this. The protein synthesis decline, the fat infiltration, even the self-sabotage - it's all connected to immune dysfunction and cellular senescence. It's the Duality

@SammyRArmstrong No way can I consume 120 grams a day,barely 60..can’t eat that much.

@SammyRArmstrong Your thread is gaining traction! #TopUnroll https://threadreaderapp.com/th... 🙏🏼@Bolsa_es for 🥇unroll

@SammyRArmstrong Stop with the world’s leading headlines. Everyone uses that and how would you prove that. Ridiculous.

@SammyRArmstrong @grok recap the facts and figures

@SammyRArmstrong If she's not treating them for centuries, I don't want to hear about it.

@SammyRArmstrong Recent studies show that a reduced protein intake or low-protein/high-carbohydrate diet plays a critical role in longevity/metabolic health.The impact of dietary protein intake on longevity and metabolic health - PMC

@SammyRArmstrong for her age her skin looks old, which might very well be due to overactivation of mTor. So,I take her protein advice with a grain of salt (pun intended)

@SammyRArmstrong Navy seals wanted to live long ... to keep doing what?

@SammyRArmstrong Stop stealing our knowledge

@SammyRArmstrong To bad they can't restore health to the nation.

@SammyRArmstrong I know too many senior people who were injured doing machine weights at the gym. Myself included, mid back on a lat, working with a trainer. Took a long time to recover.

@SammyRArmstrong Thanks for this!

@SammyRArmstrong Eating more than 1,6 grams of proteins per kg body mass has never been shown to increase muscle growth. Am I wrong?
