Gene-modding enthusiasts lazily proclaim that "If we don't do it, the Chinese will!" This isn't actually true. The Chinese are a hyper conservative society and their leaders care about maintaining harmony and the social order more than "winning" some imaginary war.

It also conflicts with the Chinese virtue of filial piety. Modifying your child erases the contributions of the parents and severs the chain. Even further, it represents an inversion. It states that, by default, the child is better than the parent (obsolete). Not Confucian.

Of course, genetic engineering proponents claim to care about the overall health of a human, but 90% of the energy they expend is spent salivating over mega IQs of 3,000. Most interested in this stuff are scrawny nerds that pedestalize intelligence, their only valuable trait.

IQ eugenics assumes that the most optimal average IQ for a society to have is the highest possible. This is a totally unfounded assumption. Intelligence can be misused. In a world full of 200 IQ geniuses, one nihilist could blow up the earth with an antimatter bomb... or worse.

The optimal average IQ is probably in the 115-120 zone. It's high enough to cut off the worst of criminals, but not so high that everyone is too snobbish to do jobs that need to be done, or create risk from rogue super geniuses. Gene modification very well may lead to our doom.
