So you saw me purchasing that dongle from Alibaba and probably are looking to get one for yourself 👀 Here’s what really happens when you order from outside India. A fun little thread 🧵

First reality check: it’s not Amazon Prime. Your parcel takes a world tour, lands in India… and then gets stuck at the real boss → Customs 🛂 Now, Customs won’t even look at your shiny dongle until you prove you’re a legit human. That’s where KYC kicks in → PAN/Aadhaar +

And here’s the catch → you also need to authorise the courier company (DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc.) to clear goods on your behalf. They do the paperwork, pay customs for you, and then bill you a small handling fee. Pro tip: upload your docs once with DHL/FedEx/UPS. They’ll remember

But wait, shipping terms! Two acronyms you’ll hear: DDP & DAP. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) → Seller pays customs in advance. You just chill, parcel shows up like magic. DAP (Delivered At Place) → The “Netflix cliffhanger” of shipping. Your parcel lands in India, courier calls

Most small gadget / hobby orders? They’re almost always DAP. So don’t be shocked when DHL/FedEx suddenly turns into a tax collector. 💸

Also… don’t try to be smart by undervaluing the goods. Customs officers have PhDs in spotting lies. They’ll revalue & slap duty anyway. Sometimes with bonus delays.

So before you order that dongle / sneaker / anime figurine: ✔️ Keep KYC ready ✔️ Authorise courier for customs clearance (small fee) ✔️ Check if seller offers DDP ✔️ Factor in duty (usually 30–40%)

That’s it. Ordering from abroad isn’t scary. It’s just India’s way of reminding you that nothing lands here without paperwork.

Do retweet the first post if you learnt something new today

@skh27 Just received a keyboard I won in giveaway, shipped from China 🥸 Fortunately no customs fees were charged. Was shipped around 23rd August. Yanwen or something was the shipping provider, and honestly the way they asked for KYC doc was shady 😂 I read that even if you don’t

@KSwapnil_ Yanwen is the best. You’d have received a whatsapp message 😅

@skh27 What if I am not staying in my hometown and working from some other state? Can I show gas bill, wifi bill or rental agreement as KYC proof of address?

@sumeetdas007 I think yes. Thats what i did this time. Shared utility bill in name of mother.

@skh27 Small box order - bill below 10 USD - Don't mention as gift = 90% of times u get the order delivered Safetynet - Look for seller who's there for few years and has good reviews✌️

@Tbhdbest Thats duty evading. Wont suggest that. Customs might hold it amd ask for purchase proof and you will be screwed there.

@skh27 I typically order from Sunsky and have not incurred any customs fees till now however, it usually takes 2 to 3 weeks for the items to arrive.

@Lens_Seekers Are they small shipments and shipped thru indiapost?

@skh27 Also to add from my experience bought shipped via Aramex Fedex (large players) get customs But items shipped via parcel which later transfer to india post dont trigger customs for some reason

@PratheekShetty_ Correct. That is because of the volume.

@skh27 Damn all this hurdles 😵‍💫 why is it so difficult man just to order stuff 🥲 ordered from shein China to Vietnam and it arrived and got delivered to my hostel very smoothly and fast. 🤷🏼‍♂️

@Shitpost_44 Duty Gst

@skh27 So, I live in a different city and I order to that address. But my aadhar/address proof is my home town. Will Kyc be rejected ?

@arvindraj4 Yes. I had the same issue this time. Gave utility bill in Mom’s name.

@skh27 Will try for sure, any protection tips from scam sellers on alibaba?

@ExplorerTejas Any seller who has been around for a long time will usually not scam. Baaki alibaba ka claim process is really good.

@skh27 same process i followed when i ordered shoes form http://nike.com

@sgr_8587 Nike usually takes care of everything. Right?

@skh27 Got charged DAP which was almost 1.5x the selling price. 🤡

@joenonaddy 🤣🤣

@skh27 Ordered a Hubsan drone from Banggood in 2017. Customs held it because the box was heavy. Had to go down, explain the drone was tiny, just bad packaging. Paid duty and took it home. So after this I ordered a set of batteries. Still waiting for those.

@skh27 As someone who has wanted to order these items, but always hesitated due to these huddles - is there any website(s) that you recommend/prefer over others?

@skh27 Ordering gadgets from outside India never goes exactly as you expect it to. The import tangles, customs, and all the stray fees always make for a pretty solid tale of woe almost every single time.

@skh27 Try frieghtforwarder like delivo , to avoid so much hassle

@skh27 No surprise Trump is hell bent on tariffs. No one can sell in India at 50-100% tariffs.
