EU officials say a private jet carrying EU chief von der Leyen was targeted by "undeniable" Russian GPS jamming in Bulgaria and the pilot was forced to circle for an hour before landing “with paper charts”. Sounds credible? Not really, so lets do some investigation. 🧵
On the very first step we do actually determine on which plane Ursula flew in. It is relatively easy: on official video you can see its registration number, which is OO-GPE. Exactly same aircraft livery on the picture of Ursula exiting the plane says we are right.
Its even easier to find the exact flight track of this aircraft on Flightradar. It flew from Warsaw to Poland with an one-hour departure delay. But how it landed? Did it really encircle Bulgaria skies for hours trying to deal with jamming?
It did not. Just followed standard landing pattern with two 180-degrees turns while descending. It was not a missed approach as aircraft didn’t ascend even for a second. Just a steady landing.
According to Flightradar, the flight took just 9 minutes longer than expected . There was no "hour of circling." This short delay is standard for ATC procedures, like traffic sequencing or a runway change. The data shows a perfectly normal flight.
Additionally Flightradar said that it monitors signal consistency through a parameter called NIC. Flight data shows it was normal throughout all the flight.
This means news of Ursula von der Leyen’s plane been jammed are fake. The departure delay was probably a holdup with von der Leyen's schedule. Faced with a frustrated passenger, the crew might have invented a simple excuse: the Russians.
