@gniffer55174980 It would be 'highly available' in other words, a duplicated (maybe triplicated) system so if one computer goes down, the others take over. However, this is ££££, and so the pressure will be on to pay its way. Again, it ain't for stopping boats.

@yelwap27 Even twenty years or so on, it would be expensive, and flaws easily built in from day one. Not to mention the running costs, so it would have to have multiple use cases.

@ChiefPieEater I hope you realise many high functioning societies have ID card; Singapore has had one gif decades. The British introduce ID in Hong Kong since no one even remember when. The tool itself is not necessarily bad/ evil. It is all on how it is used.

@ChiefPieEater And the minute it does get issued, it'll be a) faked and b) hacked. As you say, fortunately it would take years, if ever. Government and successful IT projects don't exactly go together.

@SarahDixon18 My fear is they will go cheap and expand the current passport systems. Again, migrants already get an ID from that to access Government benefits. My suspicions are it will be for access to banking, government and local government benefits and services.

@mjsimpsonfilms Yep, same chip as the current passport system. The biometrics trial was a bit of a joke, retinal didn't work, and we now have facial recognition which did not exist in the 2000s. Fingerprints are a problem, and full hand scanners are now available - that was military tech 20

@ChiefPieEater I'm confused, everyone registered BORN IN THE UK is sent a National Insurance number just before their 16th birthday. Others seeking legal work are required to apply for one. SO the rest consist of illegal migrants, foreign-born residents in the UK who have never worked legally

@casapinos Great point, however, that system is linked to HMRC, and inter-departmental working in Government is slow, political, and most management teams are criminally incompetent. The tech will be 30+ years old too.
