After more than two years of silence, I felt the need to speak up again. SmoothStreamsTV has been offline for a long time. The service is gone. The community we built is gone. But something happened this week that I can’t stay quiet about. ⬇️🧵

Two innocent men, Marshall & Antonio Macciacchera, were sentenced to 5 years in prison. Not for piracy. Not for profiting from stolen content. Just for being associated with the technical side of a service they didn’t control.

The official narrative paints this as a “piracy bust.” Here’s the article some media are celebrating: 🔗 https://www.broadbandtvnews.co... But the truth is very different.

Antonio is an elderly man in poor health. He barely understands computers. Marshall was not running a piracy ring, he was managing servers. Now both are being punished like criminals.

All because Canada’s legal system doesn’t have the tools to properly deal with digital issues. This is not justice. It’s a disgrace.

@SmoothStreams Maybe those big obnoxious SSTV watermarks that annoyed users and was clearly a terrible idea, was in fact, a terrible idea
