New essay: iPhone dumbphone! I used Apple Configurator to turn my iphone into a dumbphone. So far this has saved me about 2 hours of screen time a day! What follows is a backstory, lessons learned, and a how-to-guide to do this yourself.

@stopachka Can’t you essentially achieve the same by electing a screen time admin? e.g. someone you trust who you agree to certain app limits with who you’d then need to reach out to in order to change said limits? Also has friction + another human in the loop and bonus: it does not require

@denik Screen time + admin could work! I've seen some good stories from commenters about this. I think that one catch is that you can't disable the app store.

@stopachka I really love this. I've tried a few modern dumb phones and it's just not the same. This seems very practical with highly personalized trade offs that make it livable.

@anthonyronning_ Thanks for the kind words Anthony!

@stopachka turning your smartphone into a dumbphone is like voluntarily downgrading your porsche to a honda civic, impressive commitment to digital minimalism but also mildly psychotic

@Mafexuwu 'In a mad world, only the mad are sane'!

@stopachka Why not use Screen Zen (free) or Jomo? You can block all apps (including App Store), and allow the ones you really need. You can use strict block so you won't be able to uninstall or disable the rule.

@stopachka This is awesome. Do you know if there's an Android / GrapheneOS equivalent?

@stopachka Reclaiming time is powerful. Two hours a day adds up. What will you do with the extra time?
