@Jukanlosreve Where does South Korea’s 68.7% come from?

@Jukanlosreve i feel like this post could have been a single short tweet saying "taiwanese industries are capital intensive, so labor share of income is lower"

@Jukanlosreve Ppl who only look at income have no idea how rich Taiwanese ppl are Average is wealth is just behind Sweden & ahead of France & Germany Median is ahead of Singapore & only $10k behind the USA 🇺🇸

@Jukanlosreve Good stuff.

@Jukanlosreve Excellent article 🫡

@Jukanlosreve Good analysis, but mind: Taiwan's GINI is similar to South Korea and Japan, so "poor" isn't the right term here. People are earning mediocre salaries, but very few are truly deprived.

@Jukanlosreve This set off my BS detector: owners of housing already have a strong incentive not to leave it vacant, namely that they lose out on rental income by doing so. So I looked it up, and other sources are reporting a 6-7% vacancy rate, a fraction of the 20% claimed here.

@Jukanlosreve Nice article on a longstanding question. @GlennLuk do you agree though? I think what you had said earlier points in the opposite direction (that the Taiwanese don’t actually have worse living standards) https://x.com/glennluk/status/...

@Jukanlosreve @DAlperovitch A quick Google search shows that the premises of this article - that Taiwan somehow gets half the median income of South Korea despite comparable GDP per capita, is completely false.

@Jukanlosreve Good article. I have for long time argued for reunification of China. Right now they could still get very favorable terms: keep their own currency, flag (for Olympic games), legal system, courts, local elections, own passport etc. In future these terms might be not be this good.

@Jukanlosreve Are the corporate profits being distributed to international shareholders or where is that money going?

@Jukanlosreve Many industries provide annual bonus that are counted in months of salary. Should add that as part of the % calculation of what company keeps vs what employees keep.

@Jukanlosreve Great write-up. This reminds me of the situation in Ireland, where GDP per capita is high at 100,000 usd, but pay level is much lower than what GDP indicates. Apparently, one reason is that the big presence of American tech companies causes Irish GDP to go way up, but the

@Jukanlosreve I should start using OEM, ODM economy, really convient phrase.

@Jukanlosreve A good read.

@Jukanlosreve Very sobering article. Thank you for sharing this.

@Jukanlosreve How would you compare to Singapore who is thriving but also just an island.

@Jukanlosreve If we were smart we'd be granting 80% of the H-1B and other work visas to overproduced Taiwanese engineers. Less douchey/creepy than Indians and no worrisome ties to the CCP

@Jukanlosreve You should probably look at PPP exchange rates and use the same formula for labour share for different countries.

@Jukanlosreve Thx a lot ! I've been asking myself this question since forever !

@Jukanlosreve good read!

@Jukanlosreve Good article!

@Jukanlosreve "Italy's labor share of income is not provided for 2024, but recent data from the European Commission shows that in 2023, Italy had one of the lowest labor shares of GDP at 29.0% among EU countries."

@Jukanlosreve How can the labor share of income be low if luxury good spending is high? Aren't rich people also "labor" when compensated by high salaries? Or is the point that they buy luxury goods using their capital gains?

@Jukanlosreve As a Taiwanese, this article is quite interesting. However, I think tax burden is also an important factor to consider when measuring wealth, at least in Taiwan. Maybe it explains why Taiwan’s median financial assets per capita are higher than Korea’s because of no CGT.

@Jukanlosreve If not for the semiconductors I'd think you were writing about Spain

@Jukanlosreve There have never been 10% of the population in China. 2% much more close to reality.

@Jukanlosreve Taiwan central bank is fucking ridiculous🥳

@Jukanlosreve @AngelicaOung 这篇文章讨论为何台湾的人均GDP跟韩国的差不多但实际工资却不到一半的问题。你觉得有道理吗?

@Jukanlosreve very nice analysis and write up. thanks

@Jukanlosreve I strongly advocate for a high non-occupancy tax on properties if they are vacant for more than 6months. Properties are meant for living in not for holding as vacant long term assets. Verification can be made against utility usage/in person inspection.

@Jukanlosreve I had no idea

@Jukanlosreve Re reunification: isn't the Mainland situation nearly even worse? Gaokao, hiring, 996, etc.?
