It's still glasses But Meta's new glasses are probably the first real step towards a non-intrusive AR/XR interface Microsoft Hololens and Google Glass from a decade ago were too chunky and the display too small inside the glasses You can see where this is headed, computing
@levelsio The problem of AR/VR glasses is the bandwidth of communication between human and computer. The primary method for these glasses is voice, and non-physical touch (gesture). Both of these are super low bandwidth and error prone. It can’t replace physical touch which is higher
@levelsio Watch the eyes of the woman in the background and tell me she isn't uncomfortable having those glasses pointed at her, with the nerd making those hand gestures at the same time. San Francisco bars will be the first to ban this shit.
@levelsio You think, apple should have had this a year before meta, apple failed!
@levelsio "look like a nerd" is not going to find broad market penetration. Cell phones got small before they got popular because having a computer on your face is depression.
@levelsio No idea where Google Glass would be today if it wasn't canceled by the mob and Google for some reason listened to them. GG just didn't have the technology and it was very much an early design sample that barely made production. Really makes you hate the headless hive mind.
@levelsio I really don't see this tech being adopted by the masses, like, ever. VR/AR/etc, I think all the wearable stuff on your face is going to be used by a mere .1% of the population and just die off slowly. What do you think Pieter?
@levelsio i would use them if instead of detecting gestures it uses a ring as a joystick to select stuff. so you dont have to lift your arm up like an idiot when you want to switch songs. un-ironically some shit like this would be awesome, but less obtrusive
@levelsio I have some current-gen Meta Ray-Bans, and there are two significant issues with them I expect to plague this too: * Llama is a horribly-ineffective LLM. On top of this, it doesn't have tool use, and the interaction model sucks. * Battery life is HORRID.
@levelsio All greatness starts small, from calculator to supercomputer, from horse to rocket.. though imperfect but certainly Meta AI has leapt this tech big forward
@levelsio Great first step - we’ve seen this trilogy before just wait for version 3. Save yourself the pain!
@levelsio The idea of holding your arms out in the air in front of you to interface with a computer is retarded. There are better ways.
@levelsio I'm not convinced we want screen UI for AR/VR. I love the experience of an Oculus / Meta quest / Apple Vision but I feel like it would have caught on more by now if it was going to be a thing. Regardless of what you wear or don't wear. Sometimes the UI feels like an annoying
@levelsio Look. Heads up displays are nothing but distractive. I never use mine in my BMW. Fuck me. Looking at them takes your focus off .. THE FUCKING ROAD.
@levelsio This is very cool. Also go watch the thrillseeker video about the future of this tech, it gets even better. I can't wait for this to go mainstream! https://youtu.be/0HAql2TX9aw?s...
@levelsio You maybe right on the iPhone Air. I don’t think glasses is the interface that gets mass adoption. Chat is currently working because anyone from aged 16 to 90 can use it. How did 3D glasses for TV work out?
@levelsio Output is only half the battle. The other half is inventing an input method that doesn't make you look ridiculous in public.
@levelsio This has been obvious since Liquid Glass was demoed. And it fits into what seems to be plans for Apple Vision. Imagine if that little compute blister of the iPhone Air could power a vision headset’s compute requirements.
@levelsio What I see is that it will lead to an even more social stunted world than the one we already live in. Now you won't even be able to have confidence that the person across the table from you is even "present" for the conversation. And we thought phones were bad...just wait.
@levelsio And then you fall asleep with a meta contact lens in and it absolutely fucking destroys you
@levelsio I talked to someone wearing the current generation of Meta RayBan glasses recently and it was extremely uncomfortable. Felt like I was being recorded the whole time, although I probably wasn’t. Just a very strange feeling. Same thing with Google Glass 10 years ago. I.e.
@levelsio And yet, I was ahead of them all by decades. https://jasonzchristie.blogspo... #AR #AugmentedReality In fact, my new gaming design outdoes them all yet again.
@levelsio Pretty blatant the only people who want wearable tech is the tech simps and you are not the majority... If you want to beam your life to zuck that's your choice... But pretty sure most people especially young people look at meta as a curse now
@levelsio I think it can replace smart watches easily if they can add few health metrics to band in next gen. It can be better accessory than smartwatch where the screen is too small to be usable. Since it's RayBan it has potential to get passed as glasses without looking like nerd.
@levelsio I still got the hololens, it was pretty cool gear! The screen was pretty bright and ui/ux wasnt bad for that time, the only real problem was the weight, and yeah the price ofcourse.
@levelsio It's exciting to see how these advancements will shape the future of wearable technology and user experience. The progress towards more seamless AR/XR interfaces promises to open up new possibilities we haven't even envisioned yet.
@levelsio The thing that everyone seems to forget is we need a healthy economy with abundance for the populace to adopt instrumental technologies. People need to be able to afford something that rapidly changes every year or two. During the the birth of the iPod and touch screen phone the
@levelsio Glasses are ok man. I guess you currently don’t use. But just 2 days of continued use and you get use to it. I’m a 4 eyes guy. lol. I hope to lasik soon
@levelsio Meta is ahead fo the curve but why are they going so hard on hardware. This feels like it should be Apple's playground. Their demo just showed how many kinks they still need to workout.
@levelsio Huge technological achievement. I have to give them that. But I personally wear contacts. I'll never buy glasses like this. Even contacts like this would be a huge maybe. The end game is probably surgical implant. But I'm not sure I'd like that either.
@levelsio Unless it has 3dof or 6dof it's going to be fucking a useless jerky mess
@levelsio So many rich assholes gonna get into car accidents
@levelsio Yeah, I agree. As a “normal” glasses wearer though, the metas are still too bulky, like they look like glasses that were trendy 10 years ago (thick, dark frames)
@levelsio obviously the UI is shaky but that's because the glasses are on his hand and the brain can't compensate because they're not on your own moving head. For filming they need a tripod for the glasses!
@levelsio Meta Ray Bans could turn the users into the same type of video training data gathering units that Tesla cars are for robo driver AI but for bipedal robo AI in this case.
@levelsio It was possible before and had been for 30 years. Check out https://xn--eyetp-6wa.org it’s a very old site.
