This YouTube video with a client got 16.7 million views. So f**k it… I’m going to break down the entire strategy we used. This will be the most useful thing you read as a creator this week:
First of all, here’s the actual video. Almost 100x the average views when we first took over the channel. What made it such an outlier?
Well, here’s some viral video 101 for you. This video has 3 key components. 1. A big swing idea (built on existing format) 2. Access packaging (people need to know about this) 3. Video designed for retention + satisfaction Let’s breakdown each:
1. Big swing idea I always look for ideas with the biggest market possible. If you want 16 million people to click on a video, it’s got to reach as much of this green space (see graph) as possible. But how do you actually do that…
Introducing the concept of the “big swing bucket idea” With every channel I work on, I establish buckets. Ideas we can repeat that consistently interest our audience. For this channel it was private tours.
Here’s the thing though. People often try something completely new when trying to make a mega viral video. What if you took an existing bucket and just gave it a “big swing” ? Here’s how we did this. Brainstorm ways you could make an existing bucket a 10x.
2. Access packaging I’ve been using this strategy for years with channels and printing views. I call it “access packaging” - selling exclusive access to the viewer through your title and thumbnail. The best do this.
Access packaging naturally makes your video feel unique. “Wow… I won’t get this anywhere else” - Cambridge student who ranked first giving me a framework - Exclusive access to the nba finals Here’s how we created this feeling with this video:
3. Retention + satisfaction. Let’s start with the intro. We have 3 key visuals right away. 1. Immediately open on animals 2. Show scale of facility 3. Show animals from thumbnail Then our wording is all focused on emphasising the exclusive access we have.
After that. There are two key things our video does really well. Emotional variety + escalation Too many YouTube videos are one dimensional. Viewers love variety. You feel sad, shocked and finally uplifted by this video. And all the while the video keeps escalating.
The result when you tie all this together? An absolute banger. I want to be as transparent as possible, so I’m going to keep sharing client videos like this! I’ll pick one person who likes + RTs the top tweet & literally help you brainstorm an outlier idea myself.
The credit belongs to @ForrestGalante (the talented creator) and his amazing team. We just help provide that critical strategy element. We’re currently looking for an editor for the channel. So if that’s you, send me a DM!
