It's just nuts how badly remakes and rereleases miss the point of the original artdirection. Yeah on a technical level it MIGHT be better but man so much soul was lost. The entire video is worth a watch imo. It's in the post I quote.

Muting this now but play Stranger of Paradise!

@RoytaMustDie It's the same problem US media producers have been facing for years already: Cinematographic language have been missing a lot, maybe lack of talent? IDK, but everything now looks flat and way worse than before, be it films or games

@RoytaMustDie Ocarina Of Time 3D is one of the very few legitimately faithful remakes/remasters that I can think of off the top of my head that respects the original vision of the game and actively improves on it in literally every single way.

@RoytaMustDie Art direction is often linked to the technical limitation of its time and that is extremely hard to copy with newer tech. But there’s also different degrees in hell too. https://www.polygon.com/final-...

@mistwalker1985 My lord in heaven what am i looking at here

@RoytaMustDie Original looks way better. At least for me.

@RoytaMustDie Beo forgot games are meant to be played and not art paintings

@RoytaMustDie So tired of remakes these days looking worse and removing detail, how tf does the original look the best

@RoytaMustDie I just hate the remasters because they made Dom fat for no reason. He looked better before the remasters. I don't think that has to do with art direction, though. I don't know what you're on about. Also, I miss the old COG armor. Especially Baird's.

@RoytaMustDie this is why i love the 2006 gears of war pc port

@RoytaMustDie soul vs actual quality

@RoytaMustDie Better lighting and textures won’t instantly make a game look better, old games had more distinct art styles because they had to work around tech limitations, these types of remakes just update the game to today’s graphical standards while erasing the original’s identity

@RoytaMustDie I dislike the remaster of Arkham Asylum and City for the same reason

@RoytaMustDie Not only the colors or vibe, remastered and re-remastered are just plain studpid. Final battle, a dude with a Kryll shield, happens at daylight. Kryll + daylight. I mean... At least they have the extra chapter, unlike the original XBOX release (later added to original PC ver).

@RoytaMustDie Why is this such a prominent issue with game remasters? I don't understand what is happening.

@RoytaMustDie Whole thing about Gears of War is the characters are meant to be covered head to titties in blood and shit. You don't do this conflict looking clean.

@RoytaMustDie I always said you not gonna remake the godfather and add a shit ton of cgi. You just upload it on neflix, or bluray or whatever new compatible media there is, maybe at a higher resolution. But gamers dont have the same level of respect coz "graphics bro, raytracing bro"

@RoytaMustDie Remakes often botch the art direction, lots of them sacrifice style and intention for "better and cleaner" graphics

@RoytaMustDie It reminds me of the Bluepoint remasters. Technically sublime produced by genuine talent that nevertheless does a disservice to Team Ico's visionary art direction.

@RoytaMustDie I think, in general, with many AAA games today, the art direction is poor compared to many older games. So it doesn’t surprise me that this happens with remasters.

@RoytaMustDie You can tell they removed the fake baked lighting from the model to do actual PBR materials but it completely butchered the contrast and grit that was present from the original. Halo Infinite gives the same vibes with its flat souless lighting. Better isn't always better.

@RoytaMustDie Now I can say the same for Yakuza 3 since they made the worst decisions ever to the unnecessary remake

@RoytaMustDie Hardware limitations were a blessing. Gave way to techniques that fooled us so well. I think lack of talent is a bigger reason.

@RoytaMustDie Mans went from a hardened soldier to the singer for Smash Mouth

@RoytaMustDie Not only did they change the art direction of the assets, textures and character models. But they did away with the shadows and dark brooding elements. And with the characters. They totally went away with their gritty battle hardened looks and based their image around GoWR

@RoytaMustDie Cole and dom especially look too “pretty”

@RoytaMustDie With each version they gave dom a better fade😅🤣

@RoytaMustDie OG Dom will always be best Dom tbh, he looks like a man, rest look bland

@RoytaMustDie If he doesn't look covered in dirt, it ain't right.

@RoytaMustDie This is why i quit Modern Gaming and focused on Retro

@RoytaMustDie It's true. I love some of the additions, like flora and lighting (minus a few instances), but they really de-aged some characters.

@RoytaMustDie Not seen much of reloaded but ultimate edition looked awful. Even on PC lol

@RoytaMustDie Man even playing the orig Xbox 360 versions of the original games it's incredible how good they still look. The textures and shit are so fucking detailed

@RoytaMustDie Why does he have a baby face in Ultimate and Reloaded? That's so strange looking.

@RoytaMustDie Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the game that radicalized me as far as remasters go. To this day I still have yet to see even a single screenshot where it doesn’t look worse than the original

@RoytaMustDie It's funny all three of these games can be played on an Xbox Series X.
