For this study I downloaded the data from my YT Shorts channel with: • 316 Shorts posted • 2,637,646,780 views • 1,200,000 followers • $170,000 made from AdSense (all achieved in the last 6 months, so the data is the most relevant)

Let’s start with a question: “What metrics make a short viral?” We found two. Only two metrics ACTUALLY make your videos go viral. Let’s start with the 2nd most important one: Swipe Rate

How Swipe Rate affects views Correlation between Stayed to Watch % and Views = +0.13. When we plotted Views vs Stayed to Watch %, the big 10M+ hits (green dots) almost all sat above 80% Stayed to Watch. Below 70%, videos rarely cross into the 1M+ tier.

Now, how do likes, comments, and shares affect the views? Negatively. Well, at least that’s how it looks on the charts. The more views you get = the less likely people are to like, comment, or share. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get likes, It means that new audiences

So what’s the most important metric? Average View Duration. Correlation between AVD% and Views = +0.31. That’s the strongest relationship we found in our study (stronger than video length, swipe rate, likes, comments, etc.). Meaning: the deeper people watch your video, the

You can notice a solid trend that I marked with blue lines. Only 3 videos with less than 100% AVD got more than 10M views. Which means that high AVD almost guarantees your videos are going to go viral. I aim at 115%+, however this metric is only valid for 20–25 second Shorts.
