A mom told me today that she wanted to raise her boys to be like Charlie Kirk. Not knowing Charlie myself, but having watched him online, this is what I suggested:
First, read and know your Bible. Get a good study Bible and read it over and over. Teach your kids what you are learning. Read the introduction to each book, the notes on each verse, and the timelines. Understand how the Bible is set up. I love the John MacArthur Study Bible (ESV
Next, learn to apply scripture to the world around you, and for your kids. A simple starting place (if this is new to you) is the book Mama Bear Apologetics. They also have the Mama Bear Apologetics Guide to Sexuality. Both are excellent. https://amzn.to/46Bz9S8
Also read Natasha Crain's books, like When Culture Hates You (with Frank Turek), and also Keeping Your Kids on God's Side. https://amzn.to/47TqcGc
Include a course in Logic in your homeschool. For young kids, you can use The Fallacy Detective. https://amzn.to/4nHSmsf For high school, I like Introduction to Logic by Dr. Jason Lisle https://amzn.to/46mHeeQ
Get your kids into debate. Find a team locally, or start one. Help them to learn how to construct a good argument. Play devil's advocate with them over the dinner table while discussing issues. Help them practice thinking on their feet.
Teach accurate history from primary sources. Use a good "spine" (We use Mystery of History) and add in good classics to read, plus primary source history like speeches, official documents, letters, journals, etc. I'm going to plug my book collection here: Knowledge Keepers Books
For goodness' sake, teach them the U.S. Constitution from the view of the men who wrote it. Help them to read it and know it well. Teach them to read the actual writings and speeches of America's founders, not just someone else's interpretation of the American Revolution.
Teach them to pursue excellence, to pursue truth, and to think critically. Teach them Proverbs 1: 1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom,
These are basics. There's so much more. But you can give your kids a strong foundation to be like Charlie in their sphere of influence, whether it's their family, their church, their town, or their country. Raising up a new generation like this will truly change the world.
@nickitruesdell Excellent post, thank you. I’ve been raising kids for 27 years but having these resources in one post helps even me.
@nickitruesdell This is such excellent advice. Bookmarked! My only criticism: I am raising them to be like Jesus 😉. Your post is confirmation I’m on the right path. I’ve got most of these books covered minus a few and I just added them to my amazon wishlist. Thank you.
