The Human Rights Campaign, the largest U.S. LGBTQ activist group with an impact in the Biden admin, publishes a report on the "epidemic of violence" against "transgender & gender-expansive" people. Its top claim? 36 transgender homicide victims from Nov 2023 to Nov 2024 🧵2/15

HRC traces this back to "anti-trans stigma and discrimination," suggesting policies protecting women's sports, women's privacy, & blocking chemical castration inspire violence. “Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and legislative attacks are translating to anti-LGBTQ+ violence.” 🧵3/15

But how do the numbers stack up? I took a look at the homicide rates of various groups in the US population, and I discovered something interesting—HRC's own data suggests transgender people face less risk of homicide, not more, than other groups. 🧵4/15

HRC says there are 2M+ trans people in the US, and the Williams Institute estimates 2.8M. Using the Williams # and the HRC list of violent attacks, there were 1.29 homicides per 100,000 transgender people in 2024. Every death is tragic, but that number is very low. 🧵5/15

1⃣WOMEN FBI counted 3,812 female homicide victims in the same period. 2021 Census Bureau estimate: 166.5M women in the U.S. Rate? 2.29 victims per 100,000 women. 2⃣MEN 12,822 homicide victims in a population of 163.2M males. Rate? 7.86 victims per 100,000 men. 🧵6/15

3⃣WHITE PEOPLE 7,071 white homicide victims. 2021 Census Bureau estimate: 260.2M. Rate? 2.72 victims per 100,000 white people. 4⃣BLACK PEOPLE 8,698 black homicide victims. 2021 Census Bureau estimate: 49.6M Rate? 17.5 homicides per 100,000 black people. 🧵7/15

5⃣HISPANIC PEOPLE 2,629 Hispanic or Latino homicide victims. 2021 Census Bureau estimate: 62.1 million. Rate? 4.2 victims per 100,000 Hispanic people. 🧵8/15

Washington, D.C.'s rate? 27.3 homicide victims per 100,000. Even the rate for the lowest city on the Rochester Institute of Technology's list, Boston, is higher than trans people, at 3.7 homicide victims per 100,000. Average 2023 U.S. rate? 5.6 victims per 100K. 🧵9/15

Now, HRC insists its list of homicides is an undercount. But it would have to be wrong by orders of magnitude to justify claiming an "epidemic." Lowering the trans pop to 2M? Rate: 1.8 Going with HRC's record high of 46 homicides? Rate increases to 2.3 🧵10/15

HRC's list is misleading in another way. HRC admits: “Many victims were killed by a friend, family, or romantic/sexual intimate partner.” An ex-boyfriend killed Juchuan Hamilton. The death of Santonio Coleman, 48, may have been an accident. 🧵11/15

The good news: there isn't an epidemic of violence against transgender people caused by Matt Walsh and Ben Shapiro saying they disagree with transgender ideology. The homicide rate is low, and many cases don't support the idea that the Right is to blame. 🧵12/15

The bad news: HRC has been spewing the notion of an "epidemic" of violence against transgender people, working people into a rage, and suggesting that disagreement with the transgender agenda is tantamount to violence. 🧵13/15
