I feel like the biggest parallel for what’s happening with Magic is LEGO. In the 90’s LEGO was entirely original themes but in 1999 the company announced a partnership with Lucasfilm and it paid off big. LEGO is dominated by licenses today and is doing better than ever. 🧵

Entrenched fans of LEGO continue to voice concerns about LEGO’s lack of creativity - ironic for such a creative toy. And those are totally valid. The same valid concerns Magic players are voicing now. I too am nostalgic for the days of just four original Magic sets per year.

But this is happening, and being a fan of both Magic and LEGO, it occurs to me that perhaps I can engage with Magic in the way engage with LEGO. While I’ve spent substantially on LEGO as an adult, I don’t buy every set released, not even close. Not every set looks cool/fun to me.

Engaging with Magic in the same way, potentially skipping sets entirely, is scary as someone who has consumed Magic religiously for more than 25 years. But I guess ultimately my conclusion is: I loved LEGO growing up, and still do. And that’s likely to hold true with Magic.

@klug_alters Magic players only know magic

@klug_alters Some big differences though. Lego did not have a “universe” or world with lore that brings escapism, stories, and immersion. MTG did, but that is now mostly been erased. And that has led players like me away from the game.

@klug_alters The problem with this is that competitive players can’t just “skip” a set they don’t like. So unfortunately this model of so many sets is going to slowly kill competitive formats, which is a huge shame and will hurt WOTC in the long run.

@klug_alters That’s a good mindset for casual and commander players! Unfortunately it’s not as available to a competitive player, who is forced to keep up with every set (to varying degrees based on format). Ps did you get the Lego vending machine? My build of the year so far lol

@klug_alters The ship has long sailed for WotC to change their position on UB. The community needs to make peace with that. So long as the text in the box is good, that’s all that matters given that the “competitive players” people are claiming care about every set are buying singles anyway

@klug_alters Problem is that the "Lego Universe" was always fairly surface level and MTG has never been that way.

@klug_alters Lego star wars gutted the franchise and lego star wars fans deserve the overpriced wobbley slop that gets thrown at them

@klug_alters A year ago I said Magic is like LEGO in that yes, you can play a game with it, but you have to come up with that game yourself. There’s an overwhelming movement to push the game creation element or Magic onto the players by focusing on casual play.

@klug_alters If I were a competitive TCG player still, I’d be more upset that seven core sets a year would be overwhelming both mentally and financially for the game. I’m glad I’m casual and can just ignore all those sets but still… I feel for the competitive players.

@klug_alters Unfortunately for us, things like this can be laughed off in LEGO, but would (mechanically and financially) snap the game in half for MTG.

@klug_alters I don’t think the universes beyond would be met so negatively if there were just a few less sets

@klug_alters Lego MTG set is inevitable at this point. Also agree with your points. The pro scene is the part that completely suffers here sadly. All ppl will be left with eventually is Arena imo. I'm surprised they were able to turn back the clock a little on pro play.

@klug_alters I’ve bought every commander precon since 2011 when they started but stopped in 2024, I just can’t keep up anymore & some sets just are not appealing at all

@klug_alters Yeah my move regarding Lego was buying bluebrixx instead...

@klug_alters Look bud, I'm into Furbys now

@klug_alters Monopoly exists

@klug_alters This is exactly what it is.. had the same conversation with my play group.

@klug_alters breaking news: magic is not like lego

@klug_alters Its not the same kind of product lol
