Australia’s eSafety Commissioner is holding over 2,600 documents that track just one Christian ministry and its leaders online. When asked to release them, the agency refused. Orwell's nightmare is here. A thread 🧵

The Daily Declaration (@TheCanDec) lodged a Freedom of Information request. It named: - The Daily Declaration - The Canberra Declaration - Leaders Warwick Marsh, Samuel Hartwich, and Kurt Mahlburg - Related social media accounts The response was staggering.

eSafety admitted: “Our preliminary searches indicate there are over 2,600 documents that reference the names and/or social media handles referred to in your request.” 2,600 records. For Christian groups speaking about faith, family, and freedom.

The Commissioner then refused to release the files. The reason? Processing them would take over 100 hours of government time. That’s the legal threshold for a “practical refusal.”

Of those 2,600 records, the agency admitted around 650 are directly relevant once duplicates are removed. But reviewing, redacting, and finalising them was deemed too “burdensome.” So Australians are denied access.

The FOI officer even noted some files may contain “sensitive information” and could require consultation with other government agencies. Why does a Christian ministry’s social media presence trigger inter-agency discussions?

Here's the bigger issue: FOI laws are meant to guarantee transparency. But when agencies can cite “workload” to block access, the very mechanism designed to protect Australians ends up shielding the government from scrutiny.

Here’s what it shows us: > Christian voices are being systematically tracked. > Massive volumes of data are being stored on those who speak publicly about faith and freedom. > Transparency laws can be undermined by bureaucratic technicalities.

The Daily Declaration will resubmit the FOI with a narrower scope. But the question remains: Why does the government need thousands of files on Christian ministries in the first place?

@k_mahlburg They won't release them because it will take them 100 hours. The question remains: How many hours have they spent generating the 2600 pages in the first place? Furthermore, at what cost to the taxpayers?

@k_mahlburg @brobson_politic Do you know: How many of these documents were already in the public domain? Were any obtained via unlawful or irregular means? What is your concern?

@k_mahlburg This is how we know Christianity is the truth The world cannot accept Christianity John 16:1-3 CSB "I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling. [2] They will ban you from the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is

@k_mahlburg Any request that will bring actual posts into scope is likely to run into the same problem. You need to frame your request to capture documents created by eSafety, but excluding any posts, and any documents created automatically as a result of posts.

@k_mahlburg Great to see tax dollars being wasted on surveilling organisations that promote the health of our society! Get rid of the eKaren!

@k_mahlburg "1984 will never happen in Australia"...

@k_mahlburg https://www.parliament.vic.gov... Something is happening in Victoria which has spilled into S.A. It looks like they are labelling Christian or Christian adjacent groups as hate groups.

@k_mahlburg And we are all asleep. Blissful, ignorant slumber.

@k_mahlburg George Orwell was right
