If you sugarcoat every piece of feedback, you slow down development. Honest ≠ rude. Here’s how to give clear feedback without breaking trust. 🧵
2. Many coaches hold back. They fear hurting confidence. So they soften or avoid tough feedback. Result? Players repeat the same mistakes.
3. We don’t need to be rude or personal. We just need to be clear. Clarity is what helps players grow.
4. Use principles as your reference point. When feedback is about agreed principles, it’s no longer “you vs the player.” It’s “the principle vs the behaviour.”
5. Instead of: ❌ “Why are you so slow to react?” Say: ✔️ “We agreed to react quickly in transitions. That moment was too slow.” The focus shifts from person → principle.
6. Common mistakes ❌ Correcting everything → players switch off ❌ Using vague cues like “wake up” → no clarity ❌ Making it personal → breaks trust Feedback must be: specific, principle-based, and actionable.
7. Why it works ✔️ Feedback feels fair ✔️ Players know exactly what to change ✔️ The team identity gets reinforced
8. Feedback is not about pleasing. It’s about helping players improve. Anchor it to principles, and you’ll be honest and respected.
