Moving to Postgres was a mistake
Watch this before you say something stupid. https://youtu.be/I-ygrTr87Ww?t...
@theo Write load got you down?
@johnawahba Index bloat mostly
@theo Said no one ever
@satvikmaker Said the people who scaled Dropbox and know 1000x more than you do about databases. https://youtu.be/I-ygrTr87Ww?t...
@theo Knwoing how to use indexes is an art. In addition knoeing how db works is also important... using online cloud that give you barely 4gb ram for indexes will never be sufficient. Self hos tlostgres with 512gb ram, we have done this on 10tb+ of data (also using timescale) and it
@theo pretty sure ur apps could run on a txt file just fine
@theo you're still early in your hero's journey Theo. 5 more years and you'll be back to Mongo. this is the way
@theo You take that back! Just kidding, use the right tool for the job. Postgres works for more people than want to admit it, but isn’t for everyone. I still keep friends in the Cassandra community for that reason.
@theo No one technology is "fit all" and anyone who doesn't understand that is a shitty developer. It's wild and uncomfortable but... Postgres isn't always the solution. Throw stones. Go on
@theo Somewhere, an Oracle sales rep just smiled.
@theo What were you on before? I hope mongo, it’s webscale! https://youtu.be/b2F-DItXtZs?s...
@theo Fair, given the use case described in the video. At first i was puzzles because my use case at work is the exact opposite it seems, and mysql just does not cut it, but the argument makes sense. Thanks. TIL.
@theo You have too many indexes then
@theo damn dog don't do Postgres dirty I expect a seething 50min critique 😈
@theo Just use a txt file
@theo storage engine for indexes suck. and there are people building serious apps on neon despite this 🫥 most people should look into turso
@theo Never said by anyone
@theo How to say “I don’t know how to use Pg” not saying it directly
@theo Yeah, so you switching from convex to convex? ;)
@theo time to migrate for the 6th(?) time this year
@theo Theo cannot comprehend any tech that isn’t obsolete in two and a half weeks.
@theo I think at this point it’s a skill issue
@theo Oh no another Theo video on Postgres coming. You should create series of those lmao
@theo Postgres has never been a performance database. Index will always be a mess, but MySQL does the mess better.
@theo Told AlloyDB, no idea why you didn't listen /:
@theo The worst thing about Postgres is having to create an index for each relationship. The rest is pretty cool.
@theo What does this mean for t3chat? Time to write to CSV?
@theo its like heading to Mordor instead when you expect it to be the Shire.
@theo What's the problem? TL;DR / 60-minute video please
@theo How many rows do you have? Postgres works great for <100k
@theo Whats better? Im running mySQL and was just about to start a project to migrate over
@theo I remember that PostgeSQL has a write amplification problem. Here is an article from 2016. Is there any recent addressing to this problem. https://www.uber.com/en-JO/blo...
@theo Haven’t you moved back to Convex?
