Beyond Sunset is a passion project made in my free time. I worked for a large corporate game studio for my day job. Today, that studio closed its doors, cancelled all their games and laid off all its employees with little fanfare. 2/9
You have heard this story. We were a studio that was acquired by a larger company. They reorganized into a new studio; we didn't even have a name yet. I can't even name my employer or parent company due to NDAs. 3/9
Threads like these don't get much attention anymore unless they come from a beloved game developer, or a well-liked personality, or someone with a large following because they are normal and expected . These stories are no longer signal, they have become noise 4/9
This is the part where I'm expected to thank my former colleagues; honor them for their talents and tell them they aren't to blame. This is where I should emphasize how much this hurts us financially. I don't fucking need to. We all know the stakes. It. is exhausting. 5/9
We all know this circus. When I hit "post", I know exactly what responses this will illicit. Buzzphrases like "line go up" and "late stage capitalism" will be tossed around. Well-meaning people will show up and share their stories but ultimately ...nothing will change. 6/9
I am 35 and nothing in my life is permanent. Those who interact with this will share some thoughts and move on. I am not financially secure, this is very stressful. I am asking what people have done to change careers and find stability. 7/9
This is not me quitting game development. I love this, and this can always be a hobby for me. But this is not a sustainable career path. I have had 6 jobs in 12 years. I am quite getting too old for this shit. 8/9
Lastly, don't buy Beyond Sunset because you feel bad for me. I'll be the first to admit that it is a very niche game that isn't for everyone. Thanks to some poor choices I made, the game does not earn much money anyways, it will never be a viable income source. 9/9
If you do want to support us, consider following our next thing . We're making something less ambitious than Beyond Sunset, a GZDoom-powered Metroidvania. https://store.steampowered.com...
@sunset_city_rpg I used to work in music, so not entirely the same thing, but still arts related... Im a claims adjuster at an insurance company now. Pay isnt amazing, but its stable with (hopefully) potential advancement opportunities, and I didnt need prior insurance education.
@Nidstang__ I was recently in a car accident and have had a claim rejected multiple times. I am actually now quite familiar with insurance claims, this may very well be up my alley.
@sunset_city_rpg What did you do in gamed3v? If it's programming you theoretically should be able to get another job soon ish. Anything else is kind of on the table. Best of luck.
@sunset_city_rpg I wish I had answers for you, but you're living the dream I was never even able to reach, all I've known is part time hell gigs on the way to whats killing you - its grim
feels unreal watching a HQ hokey wolf cartoon without the boomerang screenbug at the bottom now
Republicans are about to vote (again) to reopen the government and every Democrat outside of a few sensible moderates will vote to keep it shut. This is the basic fact of the shutdown, and no one can deny it.
In the game files, Pumpkin Mansion is actually called Lah’s House. Could it be the very same Lah’s House we see in the Ghost Tale short?
