I get an app idea. I start building it because I find it useful. I see other alternatives on the internet. I get demotivated and stop working on it. Never release it. Repeat with other app ideas. How can I overcome this crap?

@catalinmpit very simple, the other app is not your own recipe. a lot of chefs can cook bolognese, but not all of them taste amazing. if you believe you are a good chef, then make people eat, let them taste and pay you for it. and other apps, that's not your business.

@mysticaltech Interesting analogy

@catalinmpit This is the biggest damage you can do to your potential. The time for when people would make an app and destroy the competitions over the Internet is gone. This is 2025. You can have 40 apps doing the same thing with little tweaks and they would find their own community and

@Hesamation > This is the biggest damage you can do to your potential. True. I wasted 10 years doing this. Started working on apps and then abandoned them.

@catalinmpit You’re not stopping building because you see alternatives You stop building because the work gets harder The last 20% functionality is 80% of the time

@banf I’m not disregarding this point, because it may play a part subconsciously too. But it’s definitely what I said too

@catalinmpit Simple: stop doing step 3.

@catalinmpit Research first lol

@saliozzia My point is that I want to continue building and not care about the alternatives.

@catalinmpit ngmi sir.

@catalinmpit There are tons of different model cars, mobile phones etc. that's how capitalism works. Endless choices.. always based on individuals. So, "who can buy my thing" not like this. Yes, they might buy.

@catalinmpit I've done this many times. Lately I've made it a point to finish the app and release it.

@TonyKorologos So did you do it?

@catalinmpit don't let yourself get demotivated they're are almost always gonna be alternatives, and that's actually a good thing

@initjean True!

@catalinmpit You never know what people will like. Claude and Grok were released after ChatGPT Instagram appeared after FB, Twitter and a bunch already existed Even the latest Omarchy. If people will like it - they will use it over existing solutions.

@StasKlymenko Makes perfect sense, but sometimes my brain is not braining.

@catalinmpit What you're building either has unique value to it or not. If not, better to learn to get demotivated before you start... e.g. quit so early it's before starting. If an idea has unique value, alternatives aren't competitors and you keep going.

@catalinmpit Do something else. Nobody needs another app for anything. The only reason this is popular is the same reason as online dating - you don't have to leave the computer.

@catalinmpit You have to identify your market advantage first. If you think the others don't have that, then you can have a chance at competing. I'm not saying beating them but it's worth a try. Elon told Sam Altman that they would not be able to compete with Google. They tried anyway.

@catalinmpit Most of those other projects probably are not exactly what you were looking for. Did those other people put the love and detail into those projects that you would? Did they have your talent? Believe in yourself.

@catalinmpit switch 2 and 3. Get inspired by other alernatives to make your app better than they are. And you can always make it better. Aditionally, build it for yourself. I usually build apps for my own needs. And when they happen to be pretty good for public, release.

@catalinmpit You said you started because you found it useful. Chances are, you are going to have your own unique feature set. I can't tell you how many times I've used software and ran into something that makes me think: "Did the dev actually USE this thing before releasing it?"

@catalinmpit Don't compare yourself to others, ever. You can just do things. Quit, don't quit—it's your choice. Your heart is free; have the courage to follow it. The world is what you make it. YOUR world is what you make it.

@catalinmpit @dhh has a saying that goes something like "the internet rewards those who keep shipping". Ignore your competition and tighten your customer feedback loop. Your customers (and potential customers) will ask for features your competition has. Build the features with most demand.

@catalinmpit Add ideas to a list that you review periodically... shift into learning mode, book as many calls with folks to talk about what they do, so you can discover where things get hard for them, record all that shit, from what you draw from their responses (think emotional language,

@catalinmpit I'm a big fan of the free market & doing things in public. Hold yourself accountable, if you say it out loud, do it. Business is won often by effort and being relentless, hardly ever is by being first. If you have the passion & resolve, you will almost always win in the end.

@catalinmpit Why aren't you looking for existing implementations of your idea before beginning? It can go two ways: There exists a solution that perfectly fits the usefulness of my idea. So, don't start on it and use theirs. There exist similar solutions, after using them, it doesn't work

@catalinmpit You missed the part where you buy the domain weeks or months before.

@catalinmpit mwhahaha that's me right there i have a genius idea, i think it's novel start working on it, search for name ideas, they're all taken, they already do what I had in mind! WTF?! you can't come up with original ideas anymore, someone else has thought it before you 🤣😭

@catalinmpit better idea? in all seriousness, release it anways. sometimes there is something better but alternatives come up and maybe they have different feature sets but then you find other use cases that perhaps you didn't think of. release, release, release
