Those turned out to not be death camps. The inmates were victims of disease and starvation at the end of the war as supplies were cut off and Germany was in chaos.

Barton said that inmates including Jewish doctors told him Belsen had not been too bad until autumn 1944. As the Russian armies were advancing many inmates chose to return to Germany which caused massive overcrowding.

He stated that they could have cremated a maximum of 184 a day at Birkenau not the 4,400 being claimed. A figure he described as "preposterous" and "beyond the realm of reality."
