For 50 years, John Ott filmed what artificial light does to life. He saw plants refuse to ripen. Fish change sex. Cancer patients improve when they ditch sunglasses. His findings hit journals. He was honoured. Then his work was buried. Here's what he documented: đŸ§”

1/ John Ott (1909–2000) was a banker turned photo-researcher Pioneer of time-lapse photography. Filmed plant growth for Disney’s Secrets of Life (1956) Found light wavelength altered cell growth & behavior more than chemicals Spent 50 years documenting how light shapes health

2/ Apples won’t ripen without the right light. 1940s: Ott filmed apples in a glass box. Outside the box → red, ripened. Inside the box → green, never ripened. He swapped glass for UV-transparent plastic. 2 days later → red. Wavelengths, not time, controlled ripening.

3/ Ott watched tomato “virus” destroy greenhouse crops. He moved infected plants into a UV-transparent house Days later: they revived & bore normal fruit His theory: light deficiency created toxic byproducts mimicking infection The plants weren’t sick—they starved for light

4/ Red light at night stopped morning glories from blooming. Ott's buds collapsed right before opening. He discovered his time-lapse lights flashed red for 5s every few minutes. Red light at night told them “it’s still day.” He filtered red. Next morning: flowers opened.

5/ Light wavelength controlled pumpkin sex development. Year 1: regular fluorescent → only male flowers. Year 2: daylight-white fluorescent→ only female flowers. Same plant. Same setup. Only the light spectrum changed. A slight wavelength shift decided male or female.

6/ Filtered light made cells malfunction. Ott filmed Elodea grass cells. Sunlight → chloroplasts streamed in order. Glass & red filters → motionless, ruptured, abnormal. Add UV → streaming restored.

7/ Light spectrum altered sex development in fish. Ott tested cool white, daylight & pink fluorescents. Under pink: 80% grew female, 20% stunted males. Moved tanks → some “females” developed male traits. It wasn’t genetics. Light was shaping sex development even after birth.

8/ Light spectrum shifted chinchilla sex ratios. Basement colony under 75W incandescent = all males, only a cage by a window produced a female. Ott sent two 100W daylight incandescents mid-pregnancy. Next litters: 3 females, then ALL females.

9/ Mink experiment: light flipped behavior & fertility. Pink glass → aggressive. Even w/ 3 hormone-assisted matings: 87% females pregnant, 90% males infertile, 4 cancers. Blue plastic → docile. First mating, no hormones: 100% fertile. Only variable: light wavelength.

10/ Ott’s conclusion: light isn’t neutral It enters through your eyes & hits the pituitary — the master switch of your hormones Different wavelengths trigger different hormonal cascades Every hormone has its own light absorption spectrum Your LEDs & screens? Hormonal signals

11/ Ott had hip arthritis. Doctors said brace, then surgery. Winters in Florida sun didn’t help—until his glasses broke. Days without them: pain vanished, cane gone, he ran stairs. Pattern: glass blocked wavelengths his pituitary needed. X-rays later confirmed joint recovery.

12/ 1959: Dr. Jane Wright tested 15 cancer patients. Instruction: spend as much time outdoors as possible, no glasses, avoid artificial light. By summer’s end: 14 had no tumor growth, some improved. The 1 patient with regular glasses? Cancer advanced. Mouse trials confirmed.

13/ A 70-year-old man with terminal lung cancer. He wore sunglasses most of the time. After reading Ott, he spent max time outdoors without glasses & avoided artificial light. Tumor vanished. He lived 8 more years. Anecdotal—but matched 14 patients no-glasses results.

14/ Albert Schweitzer’s daughter: “When my father opened his hospital in Africa, we saw no cancer. Now it’s a problem.” Ott: Glass windows? Electric lights? No. Sunglasses? Yes—canoe natives wore only those. Timeline: No sunglasses = no cancer. Sunglasses = cancer appeared.

15/ 1961: A school in Niles, Illinois had 5× the national leukemia rate. All cases came from 2 classrooms where teachers kept curtains closed. Lit all day by warm white fluorescents. Teachers changed: curtains opened, lights switched to cool white. Leukemia cases stopped.

16/ 1973: A windowless school in Florida ran a 5-month test. 2 classes: cool white fluorescents. 2 classes: full-spectrum. Cool white → fidgeting, hyperactivity, no focus. Full-spectrum → calm kids, improved learning. Also reduced cavities by 2/3. Replicated in California.

17/ 1970: Boston VA Hospital study on hamsters. High-sugar diet, 12h/day under 2 lights: full-spectrum vs cool white. Full-spectrum → avg 2.2 cavities. Cool white → 10.9 cavities, 10× more severe. Cool white also suppressed male sexual organ development to 1/5 normal size.

18/ Low-level UV exposure boosted health. 1950s Chicago: Restaurant used black UV lights for décor. Waiters under UV had near-perfect health for 18 years. No flu absences. No eye issues. Happier, more efficient staff. Later: same UV solved fish disease at Miami Seaquarium.

19/ TL;DR: Mal-illumination = Malnutrition. We moved indoors. Added glass windows. Installed artificial lights. Started wearing sunglasses. We isolated ourselves from full-spectrum sunlight & didn't realize we were creating a deficiency state. Every filtered environment—your

@the_no_mind So gooood! Thanks for this, brother. I have been studying light medicine and somehow missed John Ott’s work.

@the_no_mind Because of John Nash Ott’s book, Health and Light, I replaced most of my double glazed Low-E glass in my windows with UV transmission full spectrum acrylic. I used Optix L-UVT (L-Ultran), excellent full-spectrum transmittance. Used in animal habitats for the health of the

@the_no_mind There's actually quite a large peer reviewed literature on the biological effects of different wavelengths of light. That's why you can buy cheap red/green grow lights for your secret cannabis farm on eBay. And deep red face masks for smoothing out wrinkles.

@the_no_mind Really like your posts, never found anything I would disagree so we are following very similar pathway but you made a lot of amazing points that I did't see. Thanks for doing it. Where you live? Would be cool to get a lunch if I would travel trhough your neighborhood! Take care!

@the_no_mind The Boomer generation has been brainwashed to be fearful of the sun! They avoid it as much as possible, and wear sun block and sunglasses. Occasionally, you will see healthy AF 75+ year olds at the beach soaking up the sun, even jogging.

@the_no_mind It’s all a light story. Biophysics over biochemistry. Any day baby

@the_no_mind @RogerSeheult if you’ve never read this book this is a fantastic run down of it and though it was written in the early ‘70’s it contains invaluable information that I’m sure you’ll appreciate. I have successfully found free pdf versions of it recently
