Revisited the data on Spiderman's Arena launch since tomorrow will mark two weeks since release. Spoiler alert: it has NOT gotten better. Whether it's pick 2/design/the Omenpaths of it all, this was massively rejected. Let's use the data to analyze player decay in limited:
I wanted the two most recent releases here as well as a set that was pretty widely panned in DFT. Here, the pink lines indicate the Fridays after launch. On the first, people phone in their work/FNM at home and play a little more than usual. The next weekend, the #s usually TANK.
You may notice this weird little spot where decay magically stops for FIN and DFT, though, and blips back up. What did the two have in common? I'll give you a second. Time is ticking. Okay, pencils down. (aka go to the next post in the thread)
These were both draft formats for the PT right after release! I'm sure there are a ton of other potential explanations, but this is the only thing I could come up with. There's a potential PT effect in terms of getting people interested in a limited format.
Now, did hitting the panic button and bringing back Final Fantasy have any impact? Yes, and it's fascinating. Because so few people knew, no one was prepared and initially, there were very few FIN drafters. Spiderman is SO unpopular, though, FIN is GAINING players day over day.
Keep in mind that at this point in a draft lifecycle, there should be roughly 30K games being played a day, so clocking in at 20k is down by a significant amount and enough to get someone's ass chewed out. Also just realizing that these charts should say TOTAL GAMES OOOOOPS
To recap: Players sent a clear message to Daddy Hasbro that the set was not for them. It cost the mothership real money. FIN is helping, but the damage has been done.
Stat info: This is total games played by @17Lands users. It's totally plausible that there was a big spike in Spiderandos that don't track stats and that's why things look bad. But we'd expect to see that for other UB sets? Idk. Support 17Lands.
@jakeformayor Nice data. Big gap down. Personally I think the play volume is down entirely due to the lack of Spider-Man IP. Ideally this digital-only mechanic identical card set is a one off. Arena is still a work in progress, it has so much room to improve. Maybe Omenpaths is a loss leader
@jakeformayor Onenpaths is a complete failure for me. The art direction is so forced, it hurts. It’s especially visible after EoE, which was a very handsome expansion. Wizards has themselves to blame.
