@phrack Oh, for the record, I actually don't know what's going on. I don't know if malware is making batteries explode burning down places, or paid arsons, or truly insane coincidence. All I know is that this is a weird story and it makes me go "Hmmmmm"

@vxunderground @phrack I think the assumption that Proton mail was being compromised/read is the wrong assumption here. More likely one or more of the organizations they were compromised. Otherwise Proton may be compromised at an insider level which is bad.

@vxunderground @phrack Sounds to me like those batteries had a “fail safe” in them that was triggered to go off and burn those places down. My next look would be at the company that manufactured them and see if someone in there was a foreign agent.

@vxunderground @phrack Remember the APC UPS vulnerability a few years ago that allowed installing malicious firmware? You could remotely overvolt the hell out of them and burn them out. Like... on fire. I don't think it's too far fetched to say something similar could be done with a Li-ion battery.

@vxunderground @phrack Lithium batteries incidents in DC are not unheard of though and can be quite difficult to extinguish, happened to Maxnod and Global Switch in 2023 in France, and to OVH in Strasbourg in 2021 (whole DC burned down, due to UPS electrical failure)

@vxunderground @phrack They programmed them like a bomb to go off if their data was ever exposed or breached. So if they knew their data was breached then someone pressed the on switch remotely. Wow, I can just imagine what data is stored in there. It's not getting any press cause they own the press.
