So, it's come to my attention that that this Sans model I made is now 10 years old, this model has a big (infamous) legacy so lets talk about that in a thread -(1/22)

let's start with the history, I've sadly lost the original messages since they were on Skype, but a friend of mine told me about Undertale, during the time it was in Steam Greenlight, the humor of the game was right up my alley based on the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

When the game released I only had a Mac at the time, so I had to use one of those window emulator apps to get the game to run for me but I LOVED IT, it was so amazingly funny, with Sans and Papyrus being standout hits

So I got to work on models, on October 3rd I post this teaser image of my next models, keeping in theme to the series jokes, with the main hint being the fonts (sans. papyrus.) ... barely anyone got the hint right, most people thought it was a mario model

I followed up the next day with a slightly more obvious hint ... people still didn't get it, Undertale wasn't very widely known at this point

On October 5th I finished the models and made these 2 renders, the Sans. render especially would go down in infamy later on, there was also an additional renders posted on Halloween 2015 of different poses

So now lets talk about the models, both models are around 9k tris yet still rely on Subdivision surfaces to smooth out some low poly areas, meaning they are pretty poorly optimized

The rigs on these models are horrible and terrifying , I hadn't yet learned how to properly rig, so I relied on adding extra bones so that the automatic rigging pre-set would catch everything, which is just... a horrible way to go about it

And don't even get me started on topology, I don't think I could even explain to casuals how terrible this is, I didn't worry about my models ever being used for anything back in the day, just if they looked okay for rendering

Something people who have actually seen the Sans model in a 3D space might know is that I designed his head with an optical illusion inspired by those Hollow Face Illusion type papercrafts, so that Sans is always looking at you, meant to be a Meta Joke how he's aware of you.

now, lets go over the part I think people talk about the most in regards to this model, is the details I got wrong, at the time of making this model, the only really colored image of Sans we had was a Steam background and his Overworld sprite so colors were loosely based on that

With this model my goal was to make it as game accurate as I could, so I ignored the Sneaker design from the trading card and did slippers with a very white tint to closely match his overworld sprite's color usage, pastel cyan was also common in fanart at the time

For the hands I simply interpreted them as as a bone like skeleton hand, this was likely brought on by how Papyrus has a notable bone design to his arm, so it made sense to me that Sans would also have a hand like so

many years later an early look at the Smash Bros skins for Sans would show him with hands before being corrected to mittens, makes me wonder if my model severed as a incorrect reference for that detail.

Also, A year after my model was made, a Sans figure was released by Fangamer, I'm pretty sure this was the first time sans was depicted as having Pink Slippers, it's unclear to me if that always the intention for him

Undertale started to get really popular 2 months after it's release, likely in thanks to youtubers like Markipiler making videos about it and getting a much wider audience for the game, my art of Sans saw a huge increase of traffic quickly becoming my number one post on DA-

- likely because of how little art existed of the character, and since my art was a model, many people were asking for a download of it, which I finally gave into on December that year with a public release of Sans and Papyrus on the Models Resource

The model uploads included the plenty of formats and some extras like pre-posed exports, the original renders, and even a joke file... that feels extremely cringeworthy now

The popularity and early release of model resulted in it getting a ton of attention and use, the model files coming with pre-posed exports made it really popular for 3D printing, it was also modded into just about everything at the time (and still is?!?)

one of the weirder things that happened was the model was used in a bootleg nursery rhyme that Tobyfox himself (unfortunately) saw and commented on

I kind of thought thats where the history of this model ended. but apparently over these last ... 10!?? years the model has become even more popular?? likely in thanks to the Roblox platform where it was a popular (meme) asset, in general this model has just become a meme.

I am now forever cursed by this Sans model, it's (poor) quality and [INFAMOUS] meme status. 10 years... man...

@NibrocRock Even though this model may curse you, it was important to me growing up. Thank you for the memories you indirectly helped create :)

@NibrocRock pretty sure I've used your models in one of my first scratch projects when i was, like, 9 lol

Image in tweet by Nibroc.Rock

@NibrocRock how does it feel that your papyrus model was traced for the story of undertale depiction, along sans’ used in the iconic asgore video

Image in tweet by Nibroc.Rock

@NibrocRock Thank you for such disasterpiece ✨️
