NEW: As of 4:15 pm, air traffic controllers at Burbank Airport in California headed home and there are no air traffic controllers inside the tower. The FAA has since released a statement in response to the staffing issues. "As Secretary Duffy said, there have been increased
@CollinRugg Haha. Here’s a funny true story- I have been flying since I was 12 and know their job pretty well. I have worked for the Air Force in various capacities over two decades. Usually as crash rescue. One such location I worked, ATC would go home during the weekends. Occasionally
@CollinRugg let's start here
@CollinRugg Towers at many controlled airports close each night and are handed off to a Tracon facility. When the tower is unoccupied, a controller in Hampton, GA, can help planes land at an airport in North Carolina.
@CollinRugg @alinainmiami Make air traffic control run by AI. Will end like Waymo - 95% reduction in accidents
@CollinRugg This is controllers trying to exert power they do not have. They need to be fired for abandoning their positions. They have not even missed a payday since the government shutdown.
@CollinRugg Time to privatize the air traffic controllers. Just like Charlie called it.
@CollinRugg Hey, let’s vote Newsome! He’s doing a great job!!!
@CollinRugg Do what Reagan said 40 years ago, fire them all
@CollinRugg If AI is so great why can’t it be an air traffic controller?
@CollinRugg 4:15pm checkout. Bold move.
@CollinRugg Ummm...
@CollinRugg Reminder that Donald Trump owns the longest government shutdown and only ended it when his rich friends complained they couldn't fly.
@CollinRugg If people only knew how many untowered airports there are that people fly in to every day. A number of airports are only towered during certain hours…. This isn’t that big of a deal.. get on Unicom and communicate like everyone was taught in week 1 of flight school.
@CollinRugg It certainly can't be that far out before AI takes over most, if not all air traffic control. Ya?
@CollinRugg Fire them all like Reagan did and use military air traffic controllers
@CollinRugg There are several other airports in close proximity to Burbank: VNY (Van Nuys Airport) - 8 miles LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) - 18 miles LGB (Long Beach Airport) - 29 miles ONT (Ontario International Airport) - 44 miles SNA (John Wayne Airport) - 46 miles
@CollinRugg I remember when Reagan fired air traffic controllers who did not work.
@CollinRugg Oh well this can’t possibly end poorly
@CollinRugg Is this not something AI would actually be used for? Seems like we need it.
@CollinRugg Passengers should be informed to give them the choice of whether to get on the flight or get a refund.................disgusting Governor that does not require air traffic controllers 24/7 or just close the Airport for safety of the customers.....
@CollinRugg This is what happens when a government can’t even keep basic infrastructure running. First it’s Burbank, then what, LAX next? Absolute clown show.
@CollinRugg Time to privatize the air traffic controllers. Just like Charlie called it.
@CollinRugg Guess the sky is uncontrolled
@CollinRugg At some point AI should be handling this with real humans overseeing. You just won’t need as many. That should handle the staffing issue
@CollinRugg I’d wager they walked out on purpose.
@CollinRugg Schumer Shutown
@CollinRugg The system needs a complete overhaul. A safe, efficient, and affordable future demands it. Why does it feel like we're moving backward as a civilization sometimes? 🤨
@CollinRugg Omg. LAX is going to be insane to navigate. @POTUS can you do what Reagan did? Is it possible?
@CollinRugg They just said F it... no pay no work. I don't blame them.
@CollinRugg Hmm, if any gov. employees might be categorized as 'essential, one might think air traffic controllers would be included.
@CollinRugg Isnt that a Reagan mess?
@CollinRugg Many airports don't have air traffic controllers at all or only during the day. Burbank had about 6M passengers last year compared to 77M at LAX. Flights are delayed but planes are still flying. Is it great? No. Is it a catastrophe? Also no
@CollinRugg This actually happened at my local airport last month. They brought in controllers from other regions within hours. System works despite challenges.
@CollinRugg Hmmm. Why can’t this be done digitally now 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
@CollinRugg Uncontrolled Burbank, nice. It’ll be like O’Hare.
@CollinRugg We can’t just bring gender studies majors in?
