@culturaltutor I think you understate the goal of saving money. The number of crappy buildings that claim modernist credentials but are really just cheap metal boxes has done a number on most American cities. Modernist doesn't have to be boring, but if it is cheap, it almost surely is.

@culturaltutor What people really want is Art Nouveau/Art Deco/Modernism. That's the most organic & natural style & loved by many. Given that we build with polystyrene and render, we can easily produce those facades and a few colourful tiles. People forget that Gaudi is modern architecture.

@culturaltutor I disagree strongly. I'd say that of the modern architecture I've seen built after the art deco era maybe 25% is reasonably attractive and well built.

@culturaltutor I agree with you somewhat, but I think of buildings such as Lever House, Seagrams, Notre Dame Ronchamp, Farnsworth House, Falling Water to name a few. There’s beautiful modern work out there. Doesn’t need ornamentation to be beautiful.

@culturaltutor The people who moan the loudest in their demands for neoclassical and other historical styles NEVER WANT TO PAY FOR IT. These are projects that depend heavily on skilled craftspeople with high discretionary costs. Public buildings in these styles require “big government.”
