The term "First-Generation Lawyer" needs a serious rethink. It's often used as a catch-all for anyone who's the first in their family to enter the legal profession. But this blanket term is dangerously misleading and mostly appropriated. (1/n)
The privileged "first-gen" inherits immense social and economic capital. Doors are always open for them. They are inducted to imp panels, invited to imp events. Use their social capital for networking amongst others. (2/n)
They are entirely different from the ones who are barely making their ends meet. This is why intersectionality matters. A blanket 'first-gen' tag blurs the role of caste, class, and inherited capital. It is may be time to not term either everyone 1st gen for the sake of it. (3/n)
When celebrating the success of 1st gens, are we looking at the whole picture? Or are we only focusing on the ones who started the race with social capital? The point is not to discredit anyone's hard work. It's to stop privilege from co-opting a narrative of struggle. (4/4)
