He found me here, on @X and he told me a simply astounding, horrifying story about how the corruption in MN goes all the way to the top, how social programs are basically money laundering operations that funnel money back to the DFL. He asked if I would write about it. I said no.

I told him I'm not qualified (and I'm not). I'm not an investigator; I'm an essayist. But I'd do what I could. So I called a friend who called a friend and next thing I knew a much more important, more experienced big-name journalist was here and I was driving them around.

First, prayers for that poor soul, who was in my passenger seat. (Lord, I'm a terrible driver) But I did my best. We met with seven people in the course of three days, all of whom told the same story. Envelopes of cash handed to elected officials by people who run NGOs.

Secret meetings. Programs set up for the express purpose of directing federal money into the pockets of both small and big players. Ballot harvesting teams that go out to low-income and elderly housing complexes and intimicate people into voting a certain way. It was....awful.

I didn't sleep for weeks. I was so horrified. Just living there felt dirty. Everything everything was a lie. The foxes were guarding/plundering/pillaging the hen house. It was all worse than I could have imagined. I was worried for the whistle blowers. They were told to lie low.

There was a big story about to break. The reporter left town. So we waited, and waited, and waited... Every few weeks, one of the interested parties would check in and be told yes, the story's still underway. It's huge. All of the corruption in MN will be exposed for what it is.

And then....NOTHING. I wish I knew. Did the whistle blower stories just not check out? It's possible. I don't know these people. Maybe they were lying or exaggerating. Was someone threatened? Is there a legal issue with publishing this story? Did the DOJ kill it? No clue.

All I know is, I was left with all this, plus a TORRENT of stories on the nightly news, night after night after night, about more fraud. New fraud. Autism centers, housing stabilization, nutrition programs. Everyone talking about how terrible it is, but doing...nothing.

And finally, I was just done. Everywhere I looked in the state felt sullied. Not just because of this experience. But because of this experience ON TOP of the taxes, the crime, the lockdowns, the stupid governor. I just couldn't any more. It was like living in a cesspool.

Maybe some day the story will come out and everyone who reads this will look back and say ooohhhhhh, that's what she was talking about. But I'm resigned at this point to the fact that it may not. And I couldn't just co-exist with it any longer. So we left MN. It was time.

@annbauerwriter I am hoping that @bariweiss will go and feature these stories that other “journalists” have never finished, or in some cases started, e.g., what was with all those perfectly fit, no-beer-belly guys in khakis, sunglasses and white neck masks that marched around trying to scare us?

@annbauerwriter What was the big name reporter’s excuse for not publishing it? Did they just ghost you?

@emma_claypool no communication to speak of, but I'm the least important person in the story I had no evidence, no testimony, no personal stake. I was really just a driver and observer. So I'm the last person who would be informed.

@annbauerwriter Thanks for sharing this Anne. Let me ask this, as it may clarify how big or profound these discoveries are. Were you already considering a move and this knowledge tipped the scales, or were you not considering any moves beforehand?

@b757fo_jim We'd actually resigned ourselves to accepting the goods & bads of MN. We had a house we loved. We'd established some nice relationships after the alienation of Covid years. But this + taxes is what finally pushed us to leave. We cannot pay the highest tx in the nation for THIS.

@annbauerwriter @jeffreyatucker She should have reported herself. She still should. Trusting a 'journalist' is dangerously naive. Moreover, no one trusts them anyway & rightfully so. If it got on TV who would believe it? Only the 16 idiots who still believe idiots on TV.

@Faithkills @jeffreyatucker I do not have the resources to check out these stories and though I KNOW something is very wrong in Minnesota, I'm not interested in making accusations that ruin people's reputations unless I can double- triple- quadruple-check that they're right.
