Shortly after being called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles by Pres. Russell M. Nelson, Pres. Nelson pulled Elder Soares aside to give him some counsel.

At that time, Pres. Nelson essentially told Elder Soares, "You need to lose weight as it is harmful for your health. The Lord needs you. And the Lord needs you in His service for many years to come." What did Elder Soares do? He humbly followed the prophet and lost weight.

Whenver I listen to Elder Soares talks and see his thin face I think of this story and appreciate the humility he showed by following the prophet's counsel.

My source? Former area authority who I used to work with in the Pocatello area who a few years ago spent time with Elder Uchtdorf who was present there for a Coordinating Council in that area.

@Fletch24601 The story you shared is true. But there is something most people don’t know. He got his stomach strangled. A DTA from the South America South Area said that. They are really close friends since Elder Soares was a DTA for the church in Brazil.

@Fletch24601 I met then elder Nelson during my mission, and he was meeting with some of the missionaries and pulled my companion aside, who had gained a lot of weight, and asked "how's your health elder?" While gesturing at his belly. He lost 30lbs over the next 10 weeks
