I have long been in the "gold as insurance against currency debasement" camp, for over 25 years now. Over the long term, gold has held its purchasing power in terms of commodities like petroleum, and gold has held its own against broad stock market indexes. No, I am not

@svembu Absolutely. US indices based returns are largely on the basis of Magnificent 7 technology leaders, large Pharma and Financials. A lot of stocks have disappeared from the screen over decades. Winning Investors and market men project themselves in Media and steal the limelight.

@svembu The financial system is pure alchemy. Fiat, gold, silver, commodities, crypto—all competing in a carefully choreographed dance. Each “solution” births new problems. Each crisis demands new “innovations.” Starting to feel like a simulation where the game is: create the problem,

@svembu The problem with gold lying in household that it will be lying there until there is dire need of it..People won't sell it easily..So it will keep lying as idle and just not contributing much..

@svembu Biggest problems with gold being a “currency” 1️⃣ Extremely high storage cost 2️⃣ Super slow transaction speed 3️⃣ Not easily divisible (I can’t pay ₹500 in gold, as breaking down a 1g coin is super difficult) And adopting a centralised fiat currency backed by gold also isn’t a

@svembu That's why we should pay salaries and trade in gold grams 25kg rice was ₹500 in 2005, now it’s ₹1500, 3x ⬆️ Gold was ₹7,000 for 10g in 2005, now it’s ₹1,26,000, 18x ⬆️ So technically, if a farmer had the rice not sold, he’d be 6x poorer today. The system keeps farmers back

@svembu > No, I am not interested in crypto. Is it because of ignorance or you actually find the technology not useful?

@svembu You can be interested in Bitcoin without being interested in crypto. It requires a special kind of bias to deeply understand what drives debasement, why gold helps, etc and then to totally ignore BTC

@svembu "No, I am not interested in crypto" = I can't understand it.

@svembu Should Rupee be backed by gold?? Like how Russia did after sanctions?

@svembu The problem with gold is .. most households collected it over long period of time , mostly it was bought in cash … there is no proof of purchase or receipt or how you got the gold initially ,.. the govt will exploit it soon !

@svembu This implies that US Govt/Fed has been overpaying for T-Bills over 80 years. And holders have made above market returns. Now it's time to pay back. And they are deserting the Dollar. 😂

@svembu Gold has been always a good hedge against volatility in markets but this time it has proved its worth. 1,26,000 INR. If we somehow organise the unorganised gold in the hands of 1.4 B people in India. We will have a asset worth more than any country

@svembu yes sir. gold has always been a safe bet. Unlike crypto, it carries centuries of trust and tangible value. What’s fascinating is how each generation rediscovers its role whenever currency cycles repeat. I wonder if the next decade will further strengthen gold’s position,

@svembu gold prices really was freed only in 70's by nixon. 1970-80 gold made up for lost time but then went overboard in trying to make up for past repression. 1980-2000 gold corrected and found its true level and from 2000 gold is freely traded from a true level and up 16x in $

@svembu Is this statement true if the period under consideration ends with in November-December 2024 when the Trump II era of dollar debasement began.

@svembu @svembu Sir, how do see a currency pegged with something like petro or metals or commodities or something else?

@svembu Yes, in our culture, there is a system to buy and invest in gold. One during akshya tritiya and second during Dhanteras. Our ancestors know very well the value of gold

@svembu Isn’t staying invested in Indexes will automatically filter out losers over any given time window? For most of the people leveraged Blackjack is not possible, large investments in Gold would make them uncomfortable, Bonds would hardly beat inflation, so is Index ETF an answer?

@svembu huh. I assume you certainly understand that gold / land investments damps liquidity in the system. Economics apart, politically we will be back to a feudal society, a GoT(hrones) world. If the T-bill yield is going up, it is a budget issue. But, let us not go back to GoT.

@svembu to discourage indians from purchasing gold. thanks to our muscle memory, indians never stopped purchasing gold. now central banks including RBI doing everything to purchase and stock gold, which is sending it's value to sky high.

@svembu All asset class has valuations as Damocles sword hanging over them. Even the great Tata's who bought Corus steel struggled, happens in every asset class. Constant review of investments must.

@svembu That is why dollar was backed by Physical Gold till it was dismantled suddenly. This is when CDG asked Gold to be returned to the equivalent FR held. Don't know why no countries objected about having a fiat currency as reserve.

@svembu Makes sense but would you still purchase more gold at the high level it is at right now?

@svembu Gold definitely is a virtuous asset, but without fiat currencies, re-distribution of wealth and undertaking of welfare/growth spending is impossible ! Most nations indulge in money printing. Why they still indulges in tax terrorism is something mysterious.

@svembu this western economic model, that created after ww2 is never meant to sustain. usury should be crime. central banks have unlimited ability to generate currencies, like they did in 2008, 2020, etc. governments do not like gold, including indian government. they did everything /1

@svembu Gold is good long term hedge! But their are period when it hasn’t done well and so if one needed liquidity at those times may not have gotten best out of gold!

@svembu It would be interesting to see similar comparison for last 50 yrs, last 30 yrs bcoz the World economy and geo-political risks have markedly changed

@svembu Read evolution of transactional currencies/things/ money. If more gold mined & financial systems shift to some digital currency. Trade &commerce use as a transactional token may get changed not in the short term but unpredictable. How suddenly petrodollar is losing its sheen.

@svembu Do you ever see Elon talking about hoarding gold ? Steve Jobs never did ... Shows that you are still stuck in bullshit and innovation will be taking a back seat ... In fact you are only good at copying original ideas ...

@svembu Gold is a commodity and has a cycle also the above data is taken close to 100years investment.. I don't know a Normal person when go for investment will take 100 years as a investment horizon.. crypto is ofcourse not comparable with Gold..

@svembu Sir, long back I wrote on this topic in a concise 240 char on this same platform, Gold got its value and strength bcoz of "us - Indians" else it's just like any other metal.

@svembu We are on the same boat! I also fear Crypto! I feel Gold is the best asset!

@svembu The Nasdaq Composite Index was introduced on February 5, 1971, with an initial value of 100. As of the market close on October 10, 2025 (the most recent trading day prior to October 12, 2025), its value stood at 22,204.43.

@svembu When Currency is linked to assets like gold, it help bring fiscal conservation. Else currency becomes fiat currency with governments printing money without any basis to close spending deficit.

@svembu What if prices of Gold crash
