"How Twinless (2025) is more intricately (and smartly) written than people give it credit for" - A thread 🧵
1) Starting things off small with this. I love a good "location bookend". We see this one restaurant as the establishing shot of the movie and that's clearly a pivotal location for Dennis (James Sweeney) since he enjoys their sandwiches and it's fitting end for the story too.
2) Speaking of Dennis and his favorite restaurant, did anyone notice how in this scene, the girl who approaches him kinda looks like him? The hairstyle and the frames on the glasses... it's too similar to be coincidental. To me, it's visually communicating how Dennis' desire---
---is to have a twin of his own. I don't know, I don't think I'm reaching with this one. Sweeney's writing throughout seems clever enough for me to believe he planted this intentionally.
3) I like how this seems random from Roman (Dylan O'Brien) but afterwards, we learn that he and his twin have definitely argued about politics and the death penalty is a common topic when it comes to politics. "There's some things you can't take back" is more heartbreaking---
---because we later learn that he's referring to how he was homophobic towards Rocky in their younger days, which is something he wished he could take back. 4) Dennis tells a fake story about how "Dean" stood in for him as a means of protecting him. However, since we know---
---that Dennis tends to lie a lot, this moment has a different meaning now. In his own words, his lies sound legit because they're emotionally true but factually false. So what's emotionally true about this specific story? Oh...that's right, it sounds eerily similar to---
---the story Rocky told him while they laid in bed together. And in Dennis' fake story, he sells his twin "Dean" as the good twin to make himself seem more like Rocky in order to further connect with Roman. It's so fucked up lmao.
5) You have to now wonder how truthful this part is since we know that his mother passed away. Maybe he is being truthful here, maybe not. He did lie about his understanding of the Japanese language to Rocky after all. Love how retroactively there's ambiguity around what's true.
6) I'm a fan when movies that subliminally plant ideas into our head without being too in your face about it. There are a few shots like this where Dennis is alone next to an empty chair. An easy way of communicating loneliness.
7) At first you think Roman is just standing up for Dennis being called the F slur since it's the right thing to do but later we learn that it goes much deeper than that. He's trying to say sorry to Rocky too. Simple but effective as a reveal.
8) Twinless directly and indirectly states that Rocky and Marcie are extroverted people that give a lot to others. Makes sense why Roman connects with her really well. I imagine them sharing the same upper level of the bunk bed that he slept with Roman on is the film---
---confirming my idea. It makes the character of Marcie more thematically relevant to Roman's journey than I previously assumed. 9) Really like the choice to have Dennis' confession take place on the same side of the bed as Roman's emotional scene.
It is indeed the same hotel as well with the beds pretty much looking identical. Really feeds into the concept of the two as twins. 10) Like the visual choice of people being under blankets throughout. Good stuff right there.
11) Now this blew me away but upon my rewatch, I noticed that there's a creepier suggestion with Dennis' character. Remember how we find out that he's fired at the end? Now you would think at first that it's because he missed days at work due to his injury but no...
The movie really subtly suggests that Dennis was a MASSIVE stalker at the workplace. His boss is a really private person who doesn't like her personal details out there but somehow Dennis seems to know about her going to a certain concert? Was he the reason behind her---
--surprise birthday? Probably? It's not like she's the only one either. The film hints at him stalking Marcie too! He knew about her fascination for the Olive Garden. He knows about her parents, friends, and houseplants! Honestly I think that's why his boss fired him.
12) The final line is a good throwback to how they constantly failed to say the same thing at the same time like twins do prior in the film! And they finally say the same thing after Dennis is finally honest to Roman and tells him about how Rocky said Roman was the good twin.
"Can we get a box to go" is pretty neat too because they both will take half a sandwich home with them, which is an interesting twin separation symbolism. I do appreciate that it isn't a proper redemption for Dennis and it does kinda come across as a goodbye scene.
Perhaps they both took away something from this experience. Whether it's Dennis learning about how he hates who he is and how fucked up what he did was or whether it's Roman learning to lie like Dennis and say he has dinner plans with Marcie when he clearly doesn't.
It's a scene I'm gonna think about for a good minute. Anyway, that's the end of my thread. Just felt like making a short post singing some praises for this nice little indie gem. I hope more people see Twinless because it truly is very good.
And this was just a praise of some writing details. There's way more that can be said about the visual language employed and the utter sauce of creativity Sweeney uses for some of his editing compositions at points. Anyway, watch Twinless!
