Every market is powered by one thing: hedge pressure. Dealers hedge to stay neutral but their hedges move price. When exposure flips from positive → negative gamma, dealers go from absorbing volatility → creating it. That’s the ignition of the volatility engine.

When vol compresses (positive gamma): → Dealers buy dips and sell rips. → Price stabilizes. When vol expands (negative gamma): → Dealers sell dips and chase rips. → Price amplifies. Every reversal begins when that polarity changes.

But here’s the key: This shift doesn’t happen because of sentiment. It happens because of positioning decay. OPEX, IV crush, or put unwinds alter the hedging equation. The flows reverse before the chart does.

Example: $SPX sitting near 6,600. Dealers short 6,500 puts. As those puts decay, they no longer need the short futures hedge. → They buy back hedges → vol collapses → price rips. That’s not bullish news... that’s mechanical rebalancing.

The volatility engine works like a turbocharger: -When compression builds, energy stores. -When hedges unwind, that stored energy explodes into a move. It’s why low-volatility environments often precede massive breakouts.

How to see it coming: -Watch for IV floors (vol too cheap to sell). -Track gamma near key strikes. -Look for reclaim → retrace → confirm (RRC) When the reclaim triggers, the engine is shifting gears.

Most traders react to volatility. Pros anticipate its source. They know the market isn’t shocking anyone it’s just dealers unwinding leverage and resetting risk.
