Linguistic unity Francesca Orsini’s “Na Turk Na Hindu” sets up a classic strawman, misrepresenting modern linguists just to dismantle them. But behind that lies a pattern: turning Hindi’s evolution into a political crime scene, and nationalism into the usual suspect.

Her 2002 book The Hindi Public Sphere (1920–1940) claims Hindi became a “national language” only through the politics of the 1920s–30s. Grassroots print networks? Bhakti poetry? Vernacular schools? All conveniently sidelined.

In SOAS essay collection, A Multilingual Nation, chapter “Na Turk Na Hindu” blames linguists for “communalizing languages.” Ironically, in doing so, she crafts her own Hindi–Hindu–Hindustan caricature, a strawman that simplifies complex linguistic history into a political slogan

Her 2016 edited volume After Timur Left revisits 15th-century North India but frames its multilingual world as an idyll destroyed by nationalism. Precolonial diversity is glorified. Postcolonial consolidation is vilified.

Then comes East of Delhi (2023). Orsini maps Awadh’s literary ecology- Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Avadhi, Braj. Yet again, the “villains” are the same: colonial classifications and nationalist agendas that “fragmented” a once-seamless world.

Orsini spotlights political agendas at the expense of social and economic drivers, like urbanization, vernacular schooling, and local print markets, that organically shaped Hindi and regional tongues. Across her works, there’s a familiar choreography.

Culture is celebrated, and then blamed on ideology. Linguistic shifts are observed, then reduced to politics. It’s an academic pattern, not a coincidence.

This is the modus operandi:- - Deconstruct national identity as “manufactured.” - Romanticize a selective multilingual past. - Cast modern Hindi as hegemony, not heritage.

By flattening a complex linguistic evolution into a tale of power and prejudice, she misses the real story, how organic forces like urbanization, printing, and pedagogy built Hindi from below, not imposed it from above.

By framing Hindi’s spread as an imposition, Orsini’s bias fuels separatist anxieties in non-Hindi states and undermines constitutional respect for Hindi as one of India’s official languages.

True understanding demands crediting both political influences, print media, standardization efforts, and organic dynamics rooted in local literary cultures and oral traditions.
