If this actually happens, then it's well and truly over.
The plan here is simple: >Pass a repeal of the constitutional amendment setting up a bipartisan redistricting commission literally days before the November election. >Pray this does not result in any sort of backlash in races for the House of Delegates. >If Democrats win in two
@ChristianHeiens There’s a very real chance that the state Supreme Court stops them from doing this considering they try to do the same thing in 2021 and it stopped it and now Youngkin has put a lot of appointments onto it
@BlaykeLiptrap Youngkin has not appointed anyone to the Supreme Court because the power for judicial appointments in Virginia lies with the General Assembly, not the Governor.
@ChristianHeiens Christian, what is the vote threshold for the legislature to put a question on the ballot? In Florida it’s 3/5ths of both chambers.
@AlbertBalido Simple majority
@ChristianHeiens Cant thé gop fillbuster
@LoyalistPa There is no filibuster mechanism in the Virginia Senate.
@ChristianHeiens Why don’t Republicans have any effective messaging about the Democrats overturning the will of the people by nuking Constitutional amendments they voted for?
@NixonPunished Because this came out of nowhere and almost no one expected they would have the balls to do something like this. Which is a major failing on our part.
@ChristianHeiens Wait. Isn’t the Virginia legislature out of session right now? Doesn’t the Governor have to call a special session OR the General Assembly can reconvene if petitioned by 2/3 of each chamber? I lived in VA a long time ago so I don’t know for sure. 🤷‍♀️
@ChristianHeiens Am I crazy? Is the timeline to do something like this not completely insane? They want to go from 0 to approved redistricting before the 11/4 election in under 2 weeks?
@ChristianHeiens Absolutely appalling. The 2023 redistricting commission did a very good and very fair job with the lines they have drawn for Congressional and General Assembly districts. There is no reason to reopen that conundrum except for grossly partisan reasons. Another reason to reject
@ChristianHeiens @threadreaderapp Unroll
@ChristianHeiens @VA_GOP asleep at the wheel like usual
@ChristianHeiens Youngkin can’t veto the first one?
@ChristianHeiens Virginia is a blue state but It's NOT as blue as California so the referendum in Virginia isn't even guaranteed to pass. Plus if SCOTUS kills the VRA Dems are screwed.
@ChristianHeiens Is the other way to follow Jay Jones advice?
@ChristianHeiens I don't know why big GOP donors are not pouring money into the VA statewide races when the dems are so vulnerable.
@ChristianHeiens SCOTUS better get rid of these fucking DEI districts in the South…
@ChristianHeiens Cray cray.
@ChristianHeiens I thought Democrats need a super majority in both chambers
@ChristianHeiens Florida your move.
@ChristianHeiens @grok how likely would this succeed
@ChristianHeiens If only "our side" had the throughline of wanting raw power.
@ChristianHeiens We are losing now. It can be changed but thats reality.
@ChristianHeiens It's Rob Wittmover and Jen Kiggover
@ChristianHeiens Texas needs to go back into session and pass 38-0.
@ChristianHeiens Trump must immediately start firing federal workers and moving them out of the DC area to neuter NoVA. He has been pushing hard on the redistricting issue so hopefully he will care enough about this to actually do it.
@ChristianHeiens "Pass a repeal of the constitutional amendment" Does it count as passing if Youngkin vetos it before he leaves office?
@ChristianHeiens @grok can’t the governor veto the initial push?
