What tax reforms do Britons say they would support in principle? -Wealth tax: 75% support -Mansion tax: 69% -Exit tax: 60% -Make council tax proportionate to home value: 56% -Pegging tax thresholds to inflation: 52% -Increase employer's NI for foreign workers: 50% -Require
@YouGov This sadly shows how little the public understands about how wealth works. A wealth tax would not work and mean many leave the country, which some have already done. We need wealthy people, they pay a huge amount of tax before trying to fiddle more.
@andybell888 @YouGov We have more wealthy than ever before and normal people's lives have only gotten worse. Their wealth is in assets which get taxed lower than peoples wages. If they won't pay their fair share then they can leave, what are they gonna do, airlift their London townhouses to Dubai?
@TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Normal people aren’t being made poorer by the wealthy, they are being made poorer by the state. Assets nominally go up in value because the state spends more than it receives in taxation. Taxing the nominal increase in assets is just a tax on the state’s financial incontinence.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov When the state sells off all its income sources to private interests all that's left for them to do is tax their citizens and cut spending. Their refusal to go after the ultra wealthy in the first place is why ordinary families shoulder so much of the cost nowadays
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov The state is the worst capital allocator so selling off assets is a good thing. The ultra wealthy pay more tax than anybody else, they are just used as an easy scapegoat for people with bad understanding of economics.
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Due to the behemouth size of the state, "ordinary families" pay far less than they put into the state. It's funny, the state grows making everything worse, people become dependent and ask for a bigger state... repeat until complete economic collapse.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov The state has done nothing but shrink since Thatcher came into power, what are you even talking about?
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov lol, no. The state barely ever runs a surplus - y'know spending less than you earn like us plebs have to. Keep voting for more "free stuff", see what happens.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov All you've done by posting that graph is show government spending has remained roughly the same since the 1960's while the ultrawealthy have their tax burdens decreased
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov You should see the financial incompetence since the Red Socialists got in. Hang on, didn't you say the state has only reduced in size since Thatcher? The idea that the "ultra wealthy" are paying less than everyone else is just scapegoating nonsense. The enemy here is the state.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Please don't tell me you're about to call Starmer's Labour a socialist party. And yeah decreased in the sense that most public assets have been privatised and markets heavily deregulated. They still need to pay for public infrastructure
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov The private sector just offers the worst of both world's. The water industry is one giant private monopoly and we have record high bills and sewage pollution. I don't see how much worse it can possibly do under public ownership. All this while paying out billions in dividends
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Yes, they are socialists, obviously not socialist (or communist!) enough for you but socialist nonetheless. Here's a helpful guide for you regarding who spends money most effectively... hint: it's not the government.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov If you wanna be patronising and ignore every point I made then you do you man
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov If you don't understand that 2x2 grid and how it contradicts your "The private sector just offers the worst of both world's" then I can't help you. These "privatised" industries aren't even privatised, they're still under the thumb of the state.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Free market ideology only works effectively at a small scale. The only reason the water services aren't even worse in this country is because it at least has a bare minimum amount of oversight. What incentive do they have to provide better services when they're already a monopoly
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Nonsense. You know the state is a monopoly and creates monopolies right?
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Monopolies that at least have some semblance of accountability since we vote for who runs them. If UK water companies had even less state intervention our tap water would become borderline undrinkable
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Do you ever wonder why nothing changes when a different party gets into power? The government is a facade, a different coloured rosette on top of a permanent civil service who do everything they can to maintain the size and scope of the state. There is no accountability.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov That's neoliberal politics for you. Starmer's a neoliberal, the last five Tories were neoliberals, Brown and Blair before them were neoliberals. Nothing's gonna change when they all hold essentially the same beliefs. Polanski is the first mainstream non-neoliberal in some time
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Nope, that’s big state for you. Nothing changes because so many people are content with the decline as long as they get their “free” stuff - or they virtue signal that a massive state is an unfettered good. The bigger the state, the bigger the corruption.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov I just don't get how you're so (understandably) suspicious of the state but think massive corporations will just do what's in everyone's best interest with absolutely zero oversight
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov In a free market corporations go out of business when they go against their customers interests. With a big state, you get unaccountable big corporations and an unaccountable big state. The worst of both worlds. Massive corporate monopolies don’t happen without a big state.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov That only happens until the companies get too big to have effective competition. Google didn't become a monopoly due to the state, they gave their users what they wanted until they were in a place of complete market dominance. Now they're enshitifying all of their products
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov They have over 100 lobbyists in the US and spend hundreds of millions on lobbying. They push for regulations and legal changes to push out competition. The push for AI regulation is a case in point - all the big boys called for regulation to prevent new market entrants.
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov There is a symbiotic relationship between big corps and big state. Big corps get velvet glove treatment from the state and the state can use the big corps to extend their power. Naive leftists blame everything on big corps, ignorant that the big state caused the issues.
@saminbelize @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov Kinda contradicting yourself there, if Google had been subjected to the antitrust laws it lobbied against then it wouldn't be in this position of total market dominance. The antitrust case against Microsoft is why Windows PCs aren't all stuck with using Microsoft's web browser
@luke_coates_ @TK_Faux @andybell888 @YouGov A tiny fine equal to 1-1.5% of revenue to keep the plebs with their pitch forks placated - it’s clearly worked on you - in exchange for juicy govt contracts and regulations to protect their monopolies, not a bad trade. The state creates monopolies.
