lan wangji looks puzzled, “why would i change my number?” wei wuxian with a cast on his leg and serious pout on his face, “you said you did it after your last breakup.” lan wangji thinks for two whole minutes of an ex and realizes he'd lied to wei wuxian about dating someone.

“yes, that.” he's not proud of the lie, he just thought wei wuxian wouldn't have dated him if he were to find out lan wangji hadn't been in casual relationships before. thats what their relationship was. let's see where it takes us. nothing that serious. just some casual dating.

and that's why lan wangji was the one to break it off. because everytime lan wangji spoke of the future, he'd only get a, “let's see where it lead us baby.” and he couldn't take the idea of the man he's in love with not loving him back the same.

those types of relationships always ended in disaster, he'd seen it firsthand and so he'd broken up with wei wuxian himself. they were only together for six months so it shouldn't have been that big of a deal.

“so why didn't you?” wei wuxian asks. “huh?” lan wangji says before his mind catches up and he replies, “it's not important.” “wow, okay. i know we were only casual but saying i'm not important? that's low lan zhan.” “what? when did i say that?” “just now?”

“no i did not. changing number was not important.” lan zhan says. “oh.” wei wuxian falls quiet. they're both staring at the ground, this is starting to get awkward & its never awkward with them. “your emergency contact—” “yeah sorry, i forgot that. bad memory. i'll change it.”

“no!” lan wangji says rather loudly in the quiet room startling them both, “it is alright. doctor said i can take you home.” wei wuxian nods. “okay yeah, that's okay. let's go.” he chuckles to himself and says, “look at you, being so nice to you ex fling.” lan wangji scowls.

“what we had was not a fling.” lan wangji says, harsher than he intended. /not to me at least/ he doesn't say. “oh yeah? is that why you broke up with me on our six months anniversary?” wei wuxian retorts, he sounds genuinely upset. angry even. lan wangji gulps.

“i—” he opens his mouth than closes, there's no easy way to say without revealing his feelings and burdening wei wuxian with them. “what? no explanations?” “i love you.” lan wangji says at last. “and?” wei wuxian asks & lan wangji's eyes widen, he takes a step back.

wei wuxian's word stings. he didn't think wei wuxian woule be cruel about it. but the wei wuxian adds, “so do i. what kind of fucked up boyfriend says i love you after the breakup?” “no, wei ying.” lan wangji says, remembering wei wuxian had a habit of saying i love you randomly

“i am in love with you.” “lan zhan is this some sick game? i am in love with you too. that doesn't fucking explain why you broke up with me. do you think i am—” “what?” lan wangji interrupts him. “say that again.” “do you think i am stupid—”

“not that part, the in love with me part.” he says, moving closer to wei wuxian. “are you? really? but you said—” “said what? i always told you i loved you.” “yes but—” tears well up in lan wangji's eyes, “you said we're in a casual relationship.”

wei wuxian visibly pauses, hand hovering in the air midway to his hair, his mouth half open, “lan zhan, did you break up with me because you thought i wasn't serious about us?” he asks, his voice dangerously low. lan wangji could only muster up a nod.

before lan wangji can think, wei wuxian pushes his legs off the bed, with the help of the hospital bed he stands on his unhurt leg and bounces on it until his hands are wrapped around lan wangji's waist. lan wangji's eyes are wide in surprise, he holds wei wuxian by the shoulder

“you are a fool. a stupid, stupid—” wei wuxian cuts himself off and crashes their lips together. they hear an earful from the nurse for being careless later on.
