With the government shutdown dragging on and ugly stereotypes flying about SNAP recipients, let's cut through the noise. As someone who grew up on food assistance, I know the stigma hurts. Here's a quick FAQ 🧵 debunking myths & addressing real fears. #SNAPFacts #FoodIsHealth

Myth 1: SNAP is just for "lazy" people who don't work. WRONG! Nearly half of SNAP households have at least one working adult - often in low-wage jobs that don't cover basics. The rest? Kids (43%), seniors (21%), or disabled folks/caregivers. It's a lifeline, not a lifestyle.

Myth 2: Benefits are lavish. Reality check: Avg benefit is ~$187/mo per person ($6/day). That's $1.40/meal- barely covers basics in 99% of counties. No alcohol/tobacco/hot foods allowed. Amid shutdown, Oct payments hit as usual, but Nov could be delayed in 36+ states.

Myth 3: SNAP users blow benefits on soda & candy. Not true. Data shows SNAP purchases mirror general grocery trends - most go to staples like meat, dairy, & produce. Only ~10% goes to sweetened beverages, similar to non-SNAP shoppers. Facts are that SNAP fuels health > junk.

Myth 4: SNAP's riddled w/ fraud & waste. NOPE! Error rate <3%, mostly underpayments. Trafficking? Down to 1%. It's the most efficient safety net we have, boosting local economies $1.73 per $1 spent. Cuts/barriers hit rural families hardest (like 84% of IN's food-insecure kids).

Bottom line: SNAP fights hunger, cuts health disparities, & fuels kids' futures. Stock up on non perishables, and if shutdown persists, contact your state DHS for updates - & hit food banks early. Let's improve & protect this program, not stigmatize it with untruths. Thoughts?

@JeromeAdamsMD If every $1.00 in SNAP benefits generates $1.73 in economic activity then shouldn't we increase SNAP benefits to a level the eliminates the US debt? You may be a physician Jerome but you certainly aren't an economist. You may want to introduce yourself to the writings of Thomas

@JeromeAdamsMD I just don't care anymore. The government gives all my tax dollars, the money I work for, to pay off the rich and the poor for influence and votes. Fuck you all.

@JeromeAdamsMD I know several folks that sell there debt cards for 50 cents on the dollar. And as for illegals 1 phone call and a short form can get any illegal assistance. So you're full of shit

@JeromeAdamsMD Okay, want to lie some more, Jerome? Nice image you used, did you make it yourself, or did someone send it to you to use for them?

@JeromeAdamsMD If the economic activity argument were true we could rescue the country's economy and retire all the debt just by giving everyone money. What a bunch of fucking nonsense.

@JeromeAdamsMD It's hilarious that you think stealing $1 from me and telling me that it generates $1.73 in economic activity matters at all to me. I'm still out my $1.

@JeromeAdamsMD This is complete and utter nonsense

@JeromeAdamsMD Did your mom AND dad raise you?

@JeromeAdamsMD Hust because you texted a pretty picture doesn't make what you say true! So much more fraud out there!

@JeromeAdamsMD We could just create money without having to print more if everyone were on SNAP. Right?

@JeromeAdamsMD 0 sympathy for snap. My father lives in a camper on our property. He lives on 1k$ SSI without a pot to piss in… And somehow he doesn’t qualify for ANY food stamps!?!?

@JeromeAdamsMD If every dollars generated 1.73, please explain why we don’t just give everyone a million dollars a month and boom the economy

@JeromeAdamsMD @hollyonthehill I see you making a lot of claims without citing sources. Also, I see no definition of “economic activity” in your second claim (so-called “fact”). As a physician, I’d expect you’d know the importance of these things. You’re not “debunking” anything. Just making claims.

@JeromeAdamsMD snap is rife with fraud and abuse.

@JeromeAdamsMD Thank you for posting this.🙏

@JeromeAdamsMD This is clearly not accurate.

@JeromeAdamsMD Buying $8 organic cookies isn't classified as fraud but it should be.

@JeromeAdamsMD "economic activity?"

@JeromeAdamsMD Then put every single person in the USA on SNAP...... Oh wait.

@JeromeAdamsMD Meanwhile you fcking liar

@JeromeAdamsMD “No name given” would like to have a word.

@JeromeAdamsMD The myths are dumb, illegals get tons of food stamps, obviously they don’t admit to being illegals, they commit I’d theft. The government doesn’t produce anything, every dollar spend from taxes is from production and cost us interest and adds to our debt. Snap is rife with fraud.

@JeromeAdamsMD Work 5 hr per week is work or not?

@JeromeAdamsMD Reports of KNOWN SNAP fraud may have been low (especially during the Biden Administration) but investigation of fraud & enforcement has been ridiculously inadequate until recent months. "SNAP benefit theft is a pervasive issue. In the final quarter of 2024, there were almost

@JeromeAdamsMD These are 100% bull shit.

@JeromeAdamsMD 6% of SNAP recipients work full time.

@JeromeAdamsMD There is a big black market for food stamps. It should be done locally. Every time you remove a program from being local, you add ways for fraud. If done locally, you may know who the person is but you will know where they are living. Their application can be reviewed by

@JeromeAdamsMD You've solved EVERYTHING! Let's just give $5T / year to SNAP and, magically, we'll get $8T/year back! Woo hoo! We're saved!

@JeromeAdamsMD Whats really awful is that Trumps admin has shown over and over they DO NOT care about the AMERICAN people. Whether its middle or poverty levels. When is that going to matter? Reg people being assholes on social media is not the problem to address. We all pay taxes, we vote, wtf

@JeromeAdamsMD @Michelle1241112 But, but, these verifiable facts don’t fit the MAGA narrative!

@JeromeAdamsMD @MayaRose601 The notion that SNAP benefits generate economic activity is just stupid.
