i dont think people FULLY understand how AMAZING this is for the minecraft java community so here's a thread on why this is SO good 🧵
FIRSTLY: obfuscation is standard in video games, its essentially a way of encrypting the code, currently it looks something like the first image, in the new snapshots after mounts of mayhem is done, there will be an experimental mode that reads as plain java code
CURRENTLY for mod makers, so mods can communicate with the games code, mod makers have to read through all 9987 class files which are tiny portions of code that the main code communicates with, think the code says "now spawn mob" and then uses the class for how to spawn mobs
as class files are the only viewable code, mod makers essentially GUESS how the game communicates with classes to make mods work which means a LOT of trial and error, bugs and workarounds to make mods work, now the main code will be fully public and viewable!
BENIFITS OF THIS: -quicker to make mods -bugs are easier to diagnose and fix -workarounds not needed so performance and compatibility of mods are better -some things that were seen as IMPOSSIBLE to mod in now being possible -reading code will find new tech for farms, mcsr etc!
WHY DID THEY DO THIS: no idea LOL, traditionally obfuscation is used to make piracy harder + cheats harder to make, but mc is probs the most pirated game anyway + cheats arent AS bad in minecraft compared to a competitive shooter
ALSO for vibrant visuals to work on java, rendering code is being changed and seperated to a dedicated rendering thread, my leading theory to why is because THIS will make mod devs life harder + changing everything of the process, i think they did this to make that switch easier
interestingly, the obfuscation removal is kicking in after mounts of mayhem content has been feature complete, makes me think that vibrant visuals for java MIGHT be releasing with mounts of mayhem, at the very least the rendering will be handled by a second thread THIS update!
