So here it is, 36 and a good bit years serving the crown and it ends today, a long 🧵 First as a submariner and then a cop, I’ve done things and seen things that were awe inspiring and most will never see then before or again. I’ve been to the Falklands, after the war of course
Been to St Helena and visited the house Napoleon was exiled to, stepped foot on the North Pole, paddled in shark bay and turtle cove on Diego Garcia, been asked to leave Raffles in Singapore as apparently the “all you can eat and drink champagne brunch” isn’t a challenge. 🤣🤣
I’ve slept through torpedoes being fired whilst I laid next to them, I’ve been on watch atop a submarine as the sea itself seemed to boil and then a shoal of flying fish broke the surface and glided a short while, spent many hours listening to whale song at work
I’ve been given a tot of rum for bravery in assisting getting a submarine alongside a buoy at sea and risking my life, I’m a simple fellow really 😊 I was also fined a days pay to leave the navy due to insubordination at my leaving interview, the only fine I ever received one
I marched up to the captain and when asked “what do you intend to do when you leave the navy” the answer apparently wasn’t “cartwheels Sir, straight out of the main gate” The cry was “fined a days pay for insubordination”
I also once got a proper rollicking off an admiral and despite my pleas I was right and he was wrong he ignored me, to my disbelief he announced an apology over the boats tannoy that I was right all along 😊😊👍
Then the cops came along, first I joined Lincolnshire as SYP weren’t recruiting and spent my time down there at Spalding, a lovely little town with its own problems like anywhere but I learned one thing down there, help is a long way away so use your mouth and use it well,
There is still a senior officer down there who is a good friend and a very decent bloke, not all ACPO are what you’d think 😊👍
Then SYP came along, policing the areas I grew up in for a few years Then a dream job, I can’t tell you much about it but I was a surveillance motorcyclist, working with the CTU, MI5 and special forces for a few years
Then some prat (a firearms cop in an unmarked car) didn’t see me and pulled out as I was doing quite (very) high speeds, resulting in me needing defibrillator and CPR That was fun 🤣🤣
Ultimately, I’ve had an interesting career, all the bells and whistles anyone could ask for and much, much more than that What’s my best moment ?
I cant say really there are so many, the noise a parent makes when you return a lost child home, the comfort you give a bereaved relative, a simple laugh and joke with a member of the public that may lead them to think “not all coppers are A’holes”
I have many commendations and good work notes, I was even put forward for the QPM by one boss, sadly didn’t get it It would have been nice to meet her late majesty 😊🫡 I was awarded the lifetime achievement award by my force
I have been honoured to represent my force on Remembrance Sunday, standing feet from the cenotaph as the king laid his wreath, to carry my forces standard at the national memorial service in Glasgow, remembering fallen colleagues
I’ve helped put terrorists, rapists, murderers and corrupt cops in prison,I’ve stood up when cops were bad, I stand by that, do not besmirch the uniform I hold dear. Though I did arrest the Dearne Valley Shoe Fetish rapist, probably my best arrest, feel free to look it up 😊
I care not what anyone says but response policing is the tip of the spear, first on scene at pretty much everything, I had 2 prisoners on my very last day and I’m proud of that, still frontline on day zero To be called an “inspiration” by new recruits tells me I’ve done it right
There is so much more I have done but quite frankly I’d need several rolls of wallpaper to write it all down, it’s been one hell of a life and it’s far from over yet
I write this with tears in my eyes, the job doesn’t define me, I define the job It’s a massive wrench to leave it but I shall, to quote @TroyHawke “shoulders back and smash it”
This account won’t change for a second, well partly it will of course and I’m still trying to figure out my new name on here Thanks also have to go to my CC, Lauren Poultney for some very proud moments 😊🫡 I love you all, take care folks and all hail #TreeClub 🫡🫡😊
I’ll never forget you Sam, rest in peace young man 🥹🫡
