Tokuda shared a LOT at MH Festa about the lore and worldview of Monster Hunter Wilds. Apparently, not only was the Scarlet Forest not originally a forest, neither was the Windward Plains originally a desert.

The people of Wyveria killed monsters using the sandtide, transported their materials to Azuz for forging, and then any toxic waste products were left were pooled in what is now the Scarlet Forest where they were washed away with the downpour, all to help support their city.

The Windward Plains became a desert as the storms would kill monsters and the corpses would be obliterated into sand over many years being struck by lightning, catalyzing the chemical reactions that turned it into a fulgurite desert.

Rey Dau became the apex predator of this region after several years, because it was able to adapt to the extreme and constant lightning storms. They chose a wyvern because they thought a flying monster would fit well and showcase the more open level design of the game.

He explains that this portion of the symbol represents the lightning attribute, and says that there may be some "link" between the six dragons in the title logo of Wilds.

He says that the Wind's Gasp is a lightning generator, and that there's a reason for its appearance he can't share that he wants users to think about.

They name mons using key terms consulting worldwide languages. Rey Dau's terms were "voltage," "vertex," "light beam," "charge," and "king." So they used the Italian word "re" (king), the chinese word "léi" (lightning), the English word "ray," and the Arabic word "daw'" (light).

Kaname apparently focused a lot on the silhouette and design of Rey Dau to make sure that it would stand out amongst groups of Doshaguma and against the sandy terrain, and it was meant to command and project a presence, a coolness, and a strength right from the start.

Its mouth was designed to shred prey, and was also based on centipedes with its weird jaw extension thingies (lol)

It generates electricity as the uneven parts of its body rub against each other and the sand, and as part of that generation process it gets covered in crystals. It can use those glass-like crystals to direct and intensify the charge because they're nonconductive to electricity.

It can also take in power through the electrified atmosphere of the sandtide, allowing it to charge itself up much faster during the inclement weather. The scraping sound you hear while it flies is the sound of its crystals and shell pieces grinding against each other.

He calls the insulating pods a "relic from the era of ancient civilizations," so take that as you will.

He points out that Kunafans use these crystals, and also have livestock. He draws attention to the Chief's interior design resembling the lightning attribute symbol, and he suggests it may be interesting to consider the historical reasons why Kunafa has Seikrets.

Lastly, he mentions that he breeds lizards, two just hatched right before he left for Paris. He also says that he brought in some shed skin to be scanned and used to make the foot textures for Rey Dau, and it makes him feel weird when he plays sometimes, lol

Thank you @YuyaTokuda. I hope I did a good job conveying your Masterclass for the Anglophone fans! Thank you for your work on what is easily one of my favorite games of all time!

@lutyrannus Thank you so much, holy shit the lore in this game is absolutely insane

@lutyrannus one of the people in wyveria says like "so its a forest now..." when its brought up, so they probably didn't know it was a forest for a long long time

@lutyrannus No chata?

@lutyrannus They're so awesome
