Sequoia distributed over $50B while Roelof was the steward running Sequoia US since 2017 One of the first things @roelofbotha coached me on when I joined Sequoia was to look at each fund’s “write off rate” Any fund with a write off rate below 40% wasn’t taking enough risk

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha No names, but ~12 years ago, a VC gave me feedback that my pitch was for Sequoia, who’d potentially make a crazy return, but their firm wasn’t that type of a firm. While I’ve always regretted not getting @Alfred_Lin there, that thought became a judgement line of VCs for me.

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha Swing big, miss big, hit big ❤️

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha risk appetite defines outcomes. playing safe kills startups.

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha Anyone who fails on 40% of their calls isn't an investor. Just a gambler.

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha I desperately want this to be a true story

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha but but but... math

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha OpenAI will fix that in spades, and take some very large banks and VC forks with it

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha This is such a great reminder of what real venture looks like. Most won’t make it, but some change everything.

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha Yep. Banks that celebrate losses below their maximum risk levels aren't red lining it enough and leave money on the table.

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha Fred Wilson’s post on this is burnt into my brain. The concept applies to life just as well as to VC https://avc.com/2013/11/loss-r...

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha Armchair journalism with zero understanding of the biz or facts!

@shaunmmaguire @roelofbotha In that case, Mr. @shaunmmaguire, my name is Joseph — I’m a recent MBA graduate building an app. It’s an all-in-one news focused app with a Gen-Z focused aiming at cracking the heavily monopolized digital ads business. Please take a risk on me, I’m worth it, here’s my prototype
