NATO is building a massive automated defense zone along its eastern border from Finland to Romania. The Eastern Flank Deterrence Line uses sensors, robots, and AI to create a barrier against potential Russian aggression — Welt. 1/

German Brigadier General Thomas Lowin revealed the plan for the first time in detail. The concept: a multi-layered, robotized zone near the Russian and Belarusian borders that enemies must overcome before reaching NATO troops. 2/

The system has five pillars. First: a network of sensors on the ground, in space, in cyberspace, and in the air. They collect real-time data on enemy movements and share it instantly across NATO countries using powerful AI analysis. 3/

Second pillar: the "Joint Effects Zone"—an automated hot zone designed to immediately engage and pressure enemy forces. The goal is to break the enemy advance, slow their tempo, force them into disadvantageous positions, and wear them down step by step. 4/

Inside this zone, sensors and weapon systems work together seamlessly. Armed drones, semi-autonomous combat vehicles, unmanned ground robots, and automated air defense engage threats — but humans always make final decisions on weapon use. 5/

Third and fourth pillars: pre-positioning larger weapons and ammunition depots than before, plus maintaining current troop levels. "Unmanned systems alone cannot deter or stop an enemy. You need soldiers, you need armies," says Lowin. 6/

Fifth pillar: a cloud-based network where AI systems analyze intelligence in real-time and relay it to deployed forces. This digital battle network forms the "nervous system" of the defense line, making humans and machines a closely coordinated team. 7/

The concept draws lessons from Ukraine's defense against Russia. Some systems are already deployed, others nearing completion. Each NATO country decides whether and how to participate. No mass relocations are planned — natural barriers like swamps and forests will be used. 8X
