Four years ago on this day, Russia illegally occupied Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Videos of occupation forces storming and shelling a nuclear facility shocked the world. Since then, Russia has turned the plant into a military base, taking not only Ukraine, but the entire Europe and the world hostage to its nuclear terrorism. The Kremlin’s current plans to restart reactors under occupation are dangerous and unlawful. We urge the IAEA and the entire international community to make every effort to put an end to Russian occupation and the nuclear risks it entails. To exclude the threat of a nuclear catastrophe, the plant must be demilitarized and returned to its lawful owner and operator, Ukraine. There can be no “business as usual” in atomic energy sphere with Russia as long as it continues creating unacceptable risks for nuclear safety, including the occupation of the ZNPP and constant strikes against Ukraine’s atomic energy system. We warn international officials from normalising nuclear terrorism by attending Moscow-sponsored events. We also reiterate our call for sanctions against “Rosatom”. We continue to demand an immediate release to the plant’s staff unlawfully detained by Russian occupiers: Serhii Korzh, Serhii Potynh, and at least 33 other ZNPP employees. Russian criminals must be held accountable for systemic torture, intimidation, and arbitrary detention of civilians at the station and in the city of Enerhodar, as well as their occupation of the ZNPP. Ukraine initiatiated amendments to the IAEA Statute to ensure that an aggressor state does not influence critical decision-making in the nuclear energy sphere, and we urge all parties to support them.
