But the Siege of Calamity remains one of the most important events in modern history. 

Here’s how it all went down: 

November 20, 1979—thousands of worshippers gathered inside the Grand Mosque for the first prayer of the new Islamic century.

Suddenly—gunfire. Explosions. Chaos.

A group of heavily armed militants took over the holiest site in Islam.

The world had never seen anything like it. 

The attackers were led by Juhayman al-Otaybi, a radical preacher who claimed his leader was the Mahdi—the prophesied redeemer of Islam.

They smuggled guns in coffins and stockpiled weapons in the mosque.

Their goal? Overthrow the Saudi monarchy and establish an Islamic state. 

The Kaaba—the holiest site in Islam—was now under enemy control.

The Saudi government was in shock. Attacking the Grand Mosque was a crime punishable by death.

But they had no choice—they had to take it back. 

Saudi forces stormed the mosque, but the militants were ready.

🔹 They had snipers on minarets.
🔹 They dug tunnels beneath the complex.

The first assault failed miserably. The militants held their ground. 

Desperate, the Saudi royal family reached out to France.

The problem? Non-Muslims aren’t allowed in Mecca.

The solution? French commandos converted to Islam just to be able to assist in the operation.

With their help, the final assault began. 

The siege shook the Muslim world.
