The real story begins with Elizabeth "Lizzie" Magie.

In 1904, this progressive feminist patented "The Landlord's Game" to expose monopolies.

She created TWO sets of rules. The second set would vanish into history: 

Magie wanted people to experience how monopolies extract wealth from many for few.

The game spread through Quaker communities and college campuses.

Then came the betrayal that would change everything: 

In 1932, Charles Darrow learned Magie's game at a dinner party.

He asked for the rules, redesigned it with Atlantic City streets, and sold it as his own.

Parker Brothers rejected it at first. But not for long: 

When Darrow's version started selling, Parker Brothers quickly reversed course.

After buying "Monopoly," they discovered Magie's patent.

Their solution? Pay her $500. No royalties. No credit. 

They crafted the perfect story:

Unemployed man invents game during Depression.
Becomes millionaire.
The American Dream in a box.

The truth stayed buried until: 

In the 1970s, professor Ralph Anspach created "Anti-Monopoly" and got sued.

His defense uncovered Magie's story and her mission.
