It is believed that during the Treta Yuga Mata Sita's Swayamvar, when Shri Rama broke Shiva's bow, hearing its terrifying sound, Parshuram ji reached Janakpur in anger and without recognizing Shri Rama and Laxman, he abused them a lot.

When he realized that Ram Ji was the incarnation of Shri Hari Vishnu, he was very ashamed and to atone for his deeds, he went to a mountain in the middle of the dense forest. There he buried his axe and started doing penance The same place is known today as Tanginath Dham.
