Sociedad’s setup made that almost impossible. They defended in a 4-1-4-1, with a single pivot sitting right between the midfield and defensive lines, dedicated to marking our CAM and denying him that space.

And it wasn’t just the CAM, Sociedad’s man-marking extended to every one of our midfielders. No matter who pushed forward, their marker followed, which meant there was essentially no real space between the lines as Sociedad's whole block was very compact vertically.

Normally in such situations, teams try long shots, as players often find space on the edge of the box. But because Sociedad’s block was a mid-block rather than a deep low block so those shots would have to be from far out making long shots not a great option.

And even though a mid-block usually means more space behind the defence which usually Barca exploits brilliantly, Sociedad weren’t worried about that today as our best runners in behind were unavailable with Raphinha and Fermín injured, while Ferran started on the bench. Rashford
